Wichita Falls advocates promote men’s mental health awareness

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — During Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, local advocates are encouraging men to speak openly about their struggles, saying that breaking the stigma surrounding mental health could save lives.

According to national mental health statistics, men account for nearly 79% of suicide deaths in the United States and die by suicide at almost four times the rate of women. Mental health professionals say societal expectations and stigma often discourage men from asking for help.

Kimberly Earp with Red River Hospital said reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

“They don’t have to be alone in everything, they don’t have to struggle in silence, and they can just ask for help whenever needed,” Earp said. “That is one of the strongest things that they can do.”

Earp said many men grow up believing they should suppress their emotions, making it more difficult to seek treatment when they are struggling.

One local group is using an unconventional approach to start those conversations.

The #ICEBATHBOYS, founded by Charles Horton, encourages people to take part in cold-water immersion while using the experience to raise awareness about mental health.

“America, our community, Iowa Park, Wichita Falls — they need somebody to look up to,” Horton said. “If our videos can help somebody mentally, if the ice bath can help somebody mentally, and if we can just save one person, we have done our job.”

Supporters say cold-water immersion may temporarily increase dopamine levels and improve mood.

Regular physical activity can also play an important role in improving mental well-being.

Jim Dooley, owner of Dooley’s Gym, said exercise provides both physical and mental health benefits by helping people relieve stress and improve their overall health.

Advocates say that whether someone chooses to exercise, take an ice bath, or simply have an honest conversation, the most important step is to reach out rather than suffer in silence.

Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The Crisis Text Line is available by texting 741741, and the SAMHSA National Helpline can be reached at (800) 662-4357.
