Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends payments to millions of people, including retired workers, survivors, and recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
These groups receive their benefits on different dates based on the official payment schedule. In certain situations, however, payment dates may change. Will that happen during the 2026 World Cup hosted in the United States?
When is the FIFA World Cup?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest edition in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 national teams, 104 matches, and 16 host cities across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The tournament will kick off on Thursday, June 11, 2026, with Mexico facing South Africa at Estadio Ciudad de México. The final is scheduled for July 19, 2026, at New York New Jersey Stadium, also known as MetLife Stadium.
Will Social Security payments be sent as usual during the 2026 World Cup?
The Social Security Administration has not announced any interruptions or changes to payments scheduled during the World Cup in the United States.
As a result, payments are expected to follow the regular schedule. Here is the official payment calendar and how Social Security benefits will be distributed in June and July 2026.
Official Social Security and SSI payment schedule
According to the SSA’s official schedule, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are sent on the first day of each month. On the third day of each month, the SSA sends payments to beneficiaries who began receiving benefits before May 1997.
For people who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits, SSI payments are issued on the first day of the month, while Social Security payments are sent on the third day.
All other Social Security payments, including retirement, survivor, and SSDI benefits, are distributed on Wednesdays based on the beneficiary’s birth date:
- Second Wednesday of the month: Beneficiaries born between the 1st and the 10th
- Third Wednesday of the month: Beneficiaries born between the 11th and the 20th
- Fourth Wednesday of the month: Beneficiaries born between the 21st and the 31st
If a payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payments are issued on the previous business day.
