A study led by Binghamton University in the United States has linked regular breakfast consumption, physical activity, and adequate sleep to higher levels of psychological flexibility and mental resilience in the face of stress.اضافة اعلان

The research was based on a survey of nearly 400 university students, examining their dietary, sleep, and exercise habits alongside indicators measuring how they cope with challenges and changing circumstances.
While the findings indicate an association between these lifestyle habits and psychological traits, they do not prove that eating breakfast or exercising directly improves one’s capacity to handle stress.

According to the university’s presentation of the results, eating breakfast five or more times a week was associated with greater psychological resilience, with psychological flexibility potentially mediating this relationship.

The researchers analyzed breakfast as part of a broader set of daily habits, without testing specific foods or dietary interventions designed to boost mental well-being.

The results do not suggest that eating breakfast at this frequency serves as a universal formula for everyone, nor that skipping a single meal diminishes one’s ability to navigate difficult situations.

Psychological flexibility refers to the capacity to adapt thoughts, behavior, and emotional responses as circumstances change, rather than adhering rigidly to a single coping mechanism.

Lead author Lina Begdache, an associate professor of health and wellness studies, offered the example of someone missing a flight: while they may feel distressed, they are able to evaluate alternatives and adapt to the situation.
Resilience, under this framework, does not imply an absence of stress or the suppression of emotions, but rather the ability to process them, reassess the situation, and choose an appropriate response.

The study observed that sleeping fewer than six hours was correlated with lower psychological flexibility and resilience, whereas exercising for 20 minutes or more was linked to higher indicators of both. Conversely, frequent fast-food consumption and insufficient sleep were associated with greater cognitive and behavioral rigidity.

These figures reflect trends observed among the participants and do not represent diagnostic benchmarks or clinical recommendations applicable to the general public.

Because the research relied on anonymous self-reported data from students regarding their habits and experiences, it did not involve a randomized controlled trial to establish direct cause-and-effect relationships for breakfast, sleep, or exercise.

Consequently, the findings leave open whether maintaining structured daily routines fosters psychological flexibility, whether naturally resilient individuals are better equipped to sustain these habits, or whether confounding factors influence both. Furthermore, because the sample was restricted to university students, the findings cannot be generalized to other age groups or demographics.

Ultimately, the study paves the way for further research into the relationship between lifestyle patterns and stress adaptation, highlighting that the capacity to overcome adversity cannot be reduced to a single meal or daily habit.
