Brain-Body Therapy is a mental wellness platform that combines evidence-based movement protocols with counseling-informed guidance to help people manage anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout. The platform centers on structured exercise programs that integrate physical movement with therapeutic themes, education, and reflection, with the goal of making exercise a more practical and accessible mental health tool. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Brain-Body Therapy Founder and CEO Rio Wilson to learn more about the company’s origins, its approach to connecting exercise with mental wellness, and its plans to expand the platform.
Rio Wilson’s Background
When asked about her background, Wilson shared:
My background is somewhat unconventional because I came to entrepreneurship through both personal experience and clinical practice.
I’m the founder and CEO of Brain-Body Therapy, a mental wellness platform built on the belief that exercise is one of the most powerful and most overlooked tools we have for improving mental health.
Brain-Body Therapy combines evidence-based movement protocols with counseling-informed guidance to help people manage anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout in a structured and engaging way.
The idea came from my own journey. As a single mother navigating anxiety, depression, and the effects of complex trauma, I often couldn’t access the level of support I needed.
What I did notice was that movement consistently had a profound impact on how I felt mentally and emotionally.
That experience sparked a deeper curiosity about the connection between exercise and mental health, which ultimately led me to earn a Master’s degree in Counseling from Northwestern University.
As a counselor, I saw the same pattern over and over again.
Therapists regularly recommend exercise because the research supporting it is overwhelming, but there was no practical, scalable way to help clients consistently follow through.
That disconnect inspired me to create Brain-Body Therapy.
For the past five years, I’ve been focused on building the platform I wish had existed when I needed it most, one that transforms exercise from a recommendation into an accessible mental health tool.
Since launching in 2025, Brain-Body Therapy has grown to serve thousands of users and is attracting interest from mental health organizations, universities, employers, and government agencies seeking innovative ways to support mental well-being at scale.
Primary Responsibilities
When asked about her primary responsibilities as Founder and CEO, Wilson explained:
Today, as founder and CEO, my primary responsibility is leading the company’s vision and growth.
I oversee product strategy, partnerships, fundraising, and business development while ensuring that everything we build remains grounded in both scientific research and real-world mental health needs.
Favorite Memory
When asked about her favorite memory working for the company, Wilson recalled:
My favorite memory was launch day, October 1, 2025.
Brain-Body Therapy wasn’t something I dreamed up overnight. It was the result of years of personal healing, graduate school, clinical work, countless setbacks, and an unwavering belief that there had to be a better way to help people access mental health support.
There were many moments when building the company felt impossible.
So when the app finally went live, it was emotional in a way that’s hard to describe.
It felt like proof that all the pain, hard work, and perseverance had been transformed into something that could help others.
But if I’m honest, the moments that affect me the most aren’t the milestones or business achievements. They’re the messages from users.
Every time someone tells me the app helped them through a difficult period, reduced their anxiety, motivated them to get moving again, or made them feel hopeful when they were struggling, I get emotional.
Those moments remind me exactly why I started this journey.
Brain-Body Therapy exists because I know what it’s like to need help and not be able to access it.
Hearing that we’ve made even a small difference in someone’s life is the most meaningful reward I could ever receive.
Core Products And Features
When asked about Brain-Body Therapy’s core products and features, Wilson explained:
Brain-Body Therapy is a mental wellness app that combines evidence-based exercise with counseling-informed guidance to help users improve their mental health through movement.
Our core offering is a series of structured 45-minute Brain-Body Therapy sessions that integrate physical exercise with therapeutic themes designed to help users manage anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout.
Each session includes a brief counseling-informed discussion before movement that introduces a meaningful mental health topic, designed to educate, inspire, or challenge users, followed by a short reflection after the workout that reinforces key insights and helps users apply them to their daily lives.
The platform is built around progressive 12-week programs that are designed to create sustainable behavior change rather than short-term motivation.
Users follow guided workouts that include warm-ups, cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and cooldowns, all supported by expert instruction from Director of Fitness Luke Lombardo and counseling-informed content developed from therapeutic principles.
Brain-Body Therapy takes a targeted approach by offering programs designed around specific mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression.
Each program incorporates movement protocols selected based on research related to that condition, while providing exercise modifications and progressions that allow users to adjust workouts to their current fitness level and comfort.
This approach helps make the experience both accessible and effective for a wide range of users.
Everything within Brain-Body Therapy is grounded in scientific research.
The platform was developed over five years to translate the growing body of evidence linking exercise and mental health into a practical, scalable solution that helps people consistently apply what the research has shown for decades: movement can be a powerful tool for improving mental well-being.
Brain-Body Therapy is designed for both teens and adults ages 16 and older and is currently focused on supporting anxiety and depression, with plans to expand into additional areas such as ADHD, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.
Balancing AI With Human-Centered Mental Health Support
When asked about challenges in the sector and how Brain-Body Therapy has responded, Wilson said:
One of the biggest challenges I’ve observed recently is the rapid rise of AI in the mental health space.
While AI can be a valuable tool for education, accessibility, and support, I believe there are aspects of mental health that should remain deeply human.
At its core, mental health is about connection, empathy, and feeling understood, qualities that technology can support but not fully replace.
Rather than trying to compete with AI, we’ve focused on being intentional about where human expertise matters most.
Brain-Body Therapy is built on real clinical experience, evidence-based research, and content created by mental health and fitness professionals.
We use technology to make support more accessible and scalable, but we remain committed to keeping genuine human insight at the center of the experience.
This challenge has reinforced our mission.
As technology continues to evolve, we believe there will be an even greater need for solutions that combine innovation with authentic human understanding, helping people feel supported rather than simply processed by an algorithm.
How The Technology Has Evolved
When asked how the company’s technology has evolved since launching, Wilson explained:
The evolution of our technology has been a learning experience for me because I don’t come from a technical background.
As a founder with a counseling background, I’ve had to navigate the challenges of building a technology company from the outside in, including working through multiple development teams to find the right fit.
Since launching, we’ve continued refining both the user experience and the underlying technology.
Most recently, we’ve partnered with a new developer who brings strong expertise in modern app design, user engagement, and advanced visual experiences.
He is helping us enhance the platform’s overall look and feel while introducing new features that I believe users will be genuinely excited about.
We’re also exploring thoughtful ways to leverage AI to improve the user experience and make certain types of information more accessible and actionable.
While I can’t share all of the details just yet, these innovations are being designed to complement, not replace, the human-centered foundation of Brain-Body Therapy.
What excites me most is that we’re moving beyond simply being an app and toward becoming a more personalized, engaging mental wellness platform while staying true to our mission of helping people improve their mental health through movement.
Key Company Milestones
When asked about Brain-Body Therapy’s most significant milestones, Wilson highlighted:
We’ve been fortunate to reach several meaningful milestones in a relatively short period.
One of the most exciting has been the growth of Brain-Body Therapy since its launch in 2025.
Seeing thousands of people download and engage with the platform has been incredibly validating, especially because the concept sits at the intersection of two fields, mental health and exercise, which have traditionally operated separately.
The support from users, mental health professionals, organizations, and potential partners has reinforced our belief that there is a real need for a solution like this.
Another significant milestone has been the growing recognition of exercise as a legitimate mental health intervention.
Brain-Body Therapy was built on the idea that movement can play a powerful role in improving mental well-being, and we’ve been encouraged to see growing interest from employers, government agencies, and mental health providers seeking scalable ways to support mental health.
Perhaps the milestone I’m most proud of is our commitment to advancing the science behind this work.
The research of Dr. Andrew Sherwood and his team at Duke University has been highly influential in shaping Brain-Body Therapy’s approach.
Being in a position to support continued research through our $100,000 pledge to Duke is especially meaningful because it represents a full-circle moment: from relying on research to build the company to helping fund the next generation of discoveries in exercise and mental health.
Just as importantly, ongoing research helps us continually refine and improve Brain-Body Therapy itself.
We want to ensure that every program, protocol, and user experience is informed by the latest evidence so we can provide the most effective mental wellness platform possible.
Customer Success Story
When asked to share a specific customer success story, Wilson said:
One story that has stayed with me involves a user who told us he never thought he would go to therapy.
Like many people, he carried a lot of stigma around mental health and didn’t see traditional counseling as something he would ever pursue.
He initially downloaded Brain-Body Therapy because he was interested in the fitness component, but over time, he began engaging with the counseling-informed content and reflecting on topics he had never really explored before.
As he built a consistent routine with the app, he became more open to addressing his mental health and eventually decided to begin working with a therapist.
Today, he opens the app every day and has shared that it has completely changed his life.
Not only has he become more physically active, but he’s also developed a greater understanding of himself, improved his mental well-being, and taken steps he once believed he would never take.
Stories like his are incredibly meaningful because they highlight what we’re trying to accomplish.
Brain-Body Therapy isn’t intended to replace therapy.
Instead, it’s designed to help people engage with their mental health in a way that feels approachable and actionable, sometimes serving as a bridge to additional support when they need it.
Total Addressable Market
When asked about the market opportunity Brain-Body Therapy is pursuing, Wilson explained:
The market opportunity is substantial because Brain-Body Therapy sits at the intersection of two massive industries: mental health and fitness.
In the United States alone, tens of millions of people experience anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, and related mental health challenges each year, while hundreds of millions are actively seeking ways to improve their physical and emotional well-being.
Our opportunity extends beyond individual consumers.
We also see significant demand from mental health providers, universities, employers, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and other institutions looking for scalable mental wellness solutions.
Ultimately, we’re pursuing a market that includes anyone seeking to improve their mental health through evidence-based movement, representing a multi-billion-dollar global opportunity that continues to grow as awareness of the connection between exercise and mental well-being increases.
Competitive Differentiation
When asked what differentiates Brain-Body Therapy from its competition, Wilson explained:
What differentiates Brain-Body Therapy is that we are not simply another fitness app or another mental wellness app. We sit at the intersection of both.
Most mental health platforms focus on meditation, mindfulness, or connecting users with therapists.
Fitness platforms, on the other hand, are typically designed around physical performance, weight loss, or appearance.
Brain-Body Therapy was built around a different question: How can we use exercise itself as a structured mental health intervention?
Our approach combines evidence-based movement protocols with counseling-informed guidance to help users improve mental well-being through action.
Rather than treating exercise as a secondary recommendation, we place it at the center of the experience and provide a framework that helps people understand why specific types of movement can be beneficial for conditions such as anxiety and depression.
Another key differentiator is our foundation.
Brain-Body Therapy was created by a former counselor who experienced firsthand the challenges of accessing mental health support and saw, through clinical practice, the gap between what therapists recommend and what clients are actually able to implement.
The platform was developed over five years with a focus on translating scientific research into something practical, engaging, and scalable.
Ultimately, our goal is to create a new category of care, one that helps people harness the proven mental health benefits of movement in a structured, accessible, and evidence-based way.
Future Goals
When asked about Brain-Body Therapy’s future goals, Wilson said:
Our immediate focus is continuing to enhance the Brain-Body Therapy experience for our users.
We’re investing in platform improvements, expanding features, refining the user experience, and incorporating new technologies to make the app even more engaging and effective.
We’re also focused on growing our presence in the B2B space.
We’ve seen encouraging interest from mental health organizations, employers, healthcare groups, and other institutions looking for scalable ways to support mental well-being.
Expanding these partnerships will allow us to reach more people and make Brain-Body Therapy accessible through the organizations they already trust.
Long-term, our vision extends far beyond a mobile app.
While I can’t share specific details yet, we’re exploring ways to deliver the Brain-Body Therapy methodology outside the app.
Our goal has always been larger than building a piece of software.
We want to create a movement that changes how people think about mental health and exercise, one where movement is recognized not just as a fitness activity, but as an essential tool for mental well-being.
Success for us means helping millions of people access practical, evidence-based mental health support and continuing to advance the conversation around the powerful connection between the mind and body.
Bridging Research And Everyday Mental Health
When invited to discuss another topic, Wilson concluded:
One topic I’m always excited to discuss is the growing body of research connecting exercise and mental health.
For decades, movement has been recommended as part of treatment for conditions like anxiety and depression, yet most people still think of exercise primarily in terms of physical health, weight loss, or appearance.
What interests me most is how we can bridge the gap between what research tells us and what people actually do in their daily lives.
That’s the challenge Brain-Body Therapy was created to address.
I also think we’re at an important moment in mental healthcare.
Demand for mental health support continues to outpace access, which means we need innovative, evidence-based approaches that can complement traditional care.
My hope is that Brain-Body Therapy helps expand the conversation and empowers more people to view movement as a meaningful part of their mental health toolkit.
At the end of the day, this is about helping people feel better, function better, and realize that mental health support can take many forms.
If we can help more people understand the connection between movement and mental health, and make that understanding more mainstream, then we’ll have accomplished a lot.
