Your digestive system does more than process the food you eat. It helps your body absorb nutrients, remove waste, and support your overall health. Building healthy habits can help support better digestive health and overall well-being.

You do not need to completely change your lifestyle to support your gut. Small, consistent choices can make a meaningful difference over time. Here are several habits that can help keep your digestive system working well.

    1) Eat More Fiber

Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet. It can help support regular bowel movements and may help prevent constipation. Good sources include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, peas, nuts, and seeds.

Adults generally need between 22 and 34 grams of fiber each day. Your needs can vary by age, sex, and overall health. Increase fiber gradually and drink enough fluids as you add more fiber to your meals.

    2) Choose Balanced Meals

A balanced diet can support your digestive system and your overall health. Try including several types of foods in your meals instead of relying heavily on highly processed options. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can all fit into a balanced eating pattern.

You don’t have to avoid every processed food. Instead, focus on variety and moderation. Making healthier choices most of the time can be more sustainable than following strict food rules.

    3) Drink Enough Water

Staying hydrated supports many body functions, including digestion. Drinking enough fluids can help keep stools softer and easier to pass, which can be especially helpful when you are eating more fiber.

Your fluid needs depend on several factors, including your health, activity level, and environment. Rather than focusing on one specific amount, ask your healthcare provider what is appropriate for you.

    4) Slow Down When You Eat

Eating quickly can make it harder to notice when you are comfortably full. Taking your time also gives you more opportunity to chew your food thoroughly. Chewing food into smaller pieces helps with digestion.

Try putting your fork down between bites or taking a few extra moments during meals. Eating without distractions may also help you pay more attention to your body’s signals. These small changes can make mealtimes more mindful and comfortable.

    5) Stay Physically Active

Regular movement supports overall health and can also help maintain regular bowel habits. Physical activity may be especially helpful for people who experience constipation. Even simple activities such as walking can be an easy place to start.

You do not need an intense workout to become more active. Take a walk after dinner, use the stairs, or add movement breaks during your workday. If you have health concerns, talk with your healthcare provider about activities that are right for you.

    6) Listen to Your Body

Your body can provide useful clues about your digestive health. Watch for changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort, bloating, or other symptoms. Regularly ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement can contribute to constipation.

Everyone’s digestive patterns are different. What matters most is noticing changes from your normal routine. If a change continues or concerns you, talk with a healthcare provider.

    7) Notice Your Personal Food Triggers

Certain foods or drinks may cause digestive symptoms for some people. You may notice discomfort after eating specific foods, drinking certain beverages, or eating larger meals. Keeping a simple food and symptom journal can help you notice patterns and better understand what may be triggering your symptoms.

Before removing entire food groups from your diet, consider talking with a healthcare provider or registered dietitian. Cutting out too many foods can make it harder to get the nutrients your body needs. They can help you identify possible triggers and make changes that support both your digestive health and overall nutrition.

    8) Manage Stress

Stress can affect many parts of your body, including your digestive system. Some people notice more digestive symptoms during stressful periods. Finding healthy ways to manage stress can support your overall well-being.

Try activities that help you relax, such as walking, stretching, breathing exercises, or spending time with people you enjoy. Getting enough sleep can also support your physical and emotional health. If stress regularly affects your daily life, talk with your healthcare provider.

    9) Be Thoughtful About Alcohol and Tobacco

Alcohol and tobacco can affect your overall health in many ways. If you notice that alcohol makes your digestive symptoms worse, consider reducing your intake. Avoiding tobacco is another important step for protecting your long-term health.

Some people also notice symptoms after certain drinks or foods. Pay attention to patterns instead of assuming every digestive symptom has the same cause. Your healthcare provider can help you understand recurring symptoms.

    10) Review Medications and Supplements

Some medications and supplements can affect your digestive system. Side effects may include constipation, diarrhea, nausea, or other digestive symptoms. If you notice new symptoms after starting a medication or supplement, talk with your healthcare provider.

Do not stop taking a prescribed medication without talking with your healthcare provider first. They can review your medications and supplements, help determine whether one may be contributing to your symptoms, and recommend changes when appropriate.

Know When to Ask for Help

Healthy habits can support digestive health, but they cannot prevent every digestive condition. Talk with your healthcare provider if you have ongoing abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits that do not go away, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or repeated vomiting. These symptoms can have many causes, and your provider can help determine what may be happening.

Also reach out if digestive symptoms keep coming back or affect your daily life. Getting answers can help you understand your symptoms and find the right care. You do not have to figure out the cause on your own.

Support Your Digestive Health With the Right Care

Supporting your digestive health can start with simple habits that fit into your daily routine. Eating enough fiber, drinking water, staying active, and paying attention to your body’s signals are practical places to begin. Give yourself time to build healthy habits that feel manageable and sustainable.

If digestive symptoms continue or keep coming back, you don’t have to manage them alone. Augusta Health’s gastroenterology team can help evaluate your symptoms, identify possible causes, and develop a care plan that meets your needs. Our specialists care for a range of digestive conditions, including acid reflux, gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and colitis.
