    The Case Manager

Recently, I have been reading posts and talking with nurse case managers who say they are unhappy or burned out in their roles and are considering other career opportunities.

Their concerns are real. Managing workers’ compensation cases can be challenging. There are competing priorities, complicated systems, frustrated injured workers, demanding workloads, documentation requirements, and sometimes difficult relationships with employers, adjusters, providers, and other members of the healthcare team.

But before deciding that it is time to leave, perhaps we should ask another question: What can I do to change my experience and find meaning in the work I am already doing?

One place to start is by reconnecting with the reason many of us entered nursing and case management in the first place—the patient.

The injured worker can easily become just another claim number, diagnosis, or task on a caseload. Yet behind every claim is a person whose life is disrupted by an injury. They may be worried about their health, their job, their finances, and what the future holds.

The nurse case manager has an opportunity to make that journey a little easier.

    Refocus on Advocacy

Advocacy does not mean agreeing with everything an injured worker wants. It means helping the person understand their condition, treatment options, responsibilities, and resources so they can participate in their recovery. Sometimes the most important thing we do is listen.

    Establish Professional Boundaries

Being committed to our patients does not mean being available every minute of the day or taking responsibility for problems we cannot control. Clear professional boundaries can reduce frustration and help prevent burnout. We cannot control every physician, employer, adjuster, or system. What we can control is how we communicate, how we organize our work, and how we respond to challenges.

    Look for the Small Victories

Case management often involves celebrating progress that others may not notice: a patient attending an appointment, understanding their treatment plan, reaching a rehabilitation milestone, returning to modified duty, or finally feeling confident enough to advocate for themselves. These may seem like small accomplishments, but they represent significant steps in someone’s recovery.

    Look Internally

If you are unhappy in your role, take some time to identify what is causing that dissatisfaction. Is it the workload? The environment? Lack of support? Administrative demands? A difficult caseload? Or have you simply lost connection with the purpose behind the work?

Some problems may require a change in position or organization. Others may be improved by changing how we approach the work.

Workers’ compensation case management is not an easy job. At the end of the day, our role is not simply to move a claim toward closure. Our role is to help an injured worker move forward with their life. Not many people have the opportunity to do that and this is something worth remembering when the job becomes difficult.

If you are struggling with challenges in your role as a nurse case manager, I hope this article bring you some insights to refocus. Share it with your peers and maybe talk about it at an upcoming staff meeting. As if you are feeling this way – chances are there are others.

    Have a good week!
