World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on Sept 10 each year to bring international attention to suicide prevention and encourage action at individual, community and government levels. In 2026, the observance enters the final year of the three-year campaign “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” which began in 2024.

The campaign is led by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). Its central message is that open and informed conversations can help challenge stigma and improve understanding around suicide prevention. IASP says the campaign also calls for broader action from organizations and governments, rather than placing responsibility only on individuals.

When Was World Suicide Prevention Day Established?

World Suicide Prevention Day was established in 2003 by IASP in conjunction with WHO. The annual observance was created as an international advocacy and communication event aimed at governments, national organizations and the public.

According to IASP, the day carries a central message that suicide can be prevented and has been used to raise awareness and address stigma. The observance has since expanded into a global event, with activities ranging from educational programmes to public campaigns and community events. IASP says the day has been observed in more than 60 countries in recent years.

Sept 10 provides a fixed date for countries and organizations to bring suicide prevention into public discussion and highlight work taking place throughout the year. The day is intended to give visibility to prevention efforts while encouraging people to approach the subject with greater understanding.

IASP’s campaign materials stress that suicide prevention should not be limited to one annual event, but that the day provides an opportunity to focus attention on the issue. The organization encourages activities that can involve communities, researchers, health professionals, policymakers, volunteers and people with lived experience. This makes the observance both an awareness event and a platform for wider discussion about prevention.

On Thursday, the Prince and Princess of Wales were at Everton’s football ground in Liverpool to launch a project encouraging people to remove the stigma around mental health challenges. He urged people to help prevent suicides.

“Sport has the ability to reach people who may never walk through the door of a mental healthcare service,” Prince William remarked. “People who may never seek support themselves and may be struggling in silence.

What Is the World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 Theme?

The 2026 theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” with “Start the Conversation“ as its call to action. This is the third and final year of the current campaign, with a new theme expected to be introduced in 2027.

IASP says changing the narrative involves moving away from silence, stigma and misunderstanding and toward openness, empathy and support. The campaign encourages individuals, communities, organizations and governments to take part in discussions about suicide and prevention. It also points to the need for systemic change, including policies, access to care and collaboration across different sectors.
