With World Heart Day less than four weeks away, the European Commission has announced a new European initiative focused on prevention

The initiative, EU Screening Week 2026, will take place from 28 September to 4 October and will focus on prevention, health screening, early diagnosis and timely intervention across Europe.

EU Screening Week 2026 aims to raise awareness of the importance of identifying health risks and diseases early, while encouraging people to take a more proactive approach to their health.

Taking place during World Heart Day week, EU Screening Week also aligns with the objectives of the EU Safe Hearts Plan. The EU Safe Hearts Plan emphasises preventing cardiovascular disease and improving the early detection and management of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Focus on cardiovascular and metabolic health

Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes remain major health challenges across Europe. Early identification of risk factors can give people the opportunity to make lifestyle changes, seek medical advice, and access appropriate care before conditions become more serious.

EU Screening Week will highlight how screening and monitoring can support this approach. From cardiovascular risk assessments and diabetes screening to advanced in vitro diagnostic testing, medical technologies can help healthcare professionals gather important information and make earlier, more informed decisions.

It also recognises the close relationship between heart and metabolic health. Conditions such as diabetes can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, making prevention and early detection an important part of long-term health management.

    Organisations encouraged to get involved

Healthcare organisations, patient groups, healthcare professionals, industry partners and community organisations are being encouraged to organise activities during the week.

Activities could range from public awareness campaigns and educational events to initiatives showcasing existing screening, monitoring and disease management programmes.

Organisations could also use the week to encourage people to understand their personal health risks and seek appropriate medical advice when needed.

By bringing screening and prevention messages into communities, the campaign aims to make information about health risks and early detection more accessible.

    Technology supporting earlier detection

Medical technology is expected to play an important role in the conversation throughout EU Screening Week.

Innovative diagnostic and monitoring technologies can provide healthcare professionals with information that may help identify disease earlier and support more personalised care pathways. Advances in in vitro diagnostics, for example, can support screening and monitoring across a range of health conditions.

These technologies can complement prevention programmes by helping clinicians identify risks, monitor changes in a patient’s health and support treatment decisions.

    Building a healthier Europe

EU Screening Week 2026 is intended to be more than a week of awareness. By bringing together healthcare organisations, professionals, patient communities, policymakers and industry, the initiative seeks to strengthen the wider focus on prevention and early intervention.

For members of the public, the week provides an opportunity to learn more about screening, understand potential health risks and consider whether they should seek professional advice.

For organisations, it offers a platform to showcase existing programmes and demonstrate how prevention, screening and medical technologies can contribute to better health outcomes.
