Wellbeing is reshaping the travel retail landscape and opening up new avenues for passenger engagement and spend. To help stakeholders unlock its potential, TRBusiness is launching TR Wellbeing Week – a digital event taking place from 30 November to 4 December – bringing you a compelling programme of live conference sessions alongside exclusive news commentary and analysis.
Launched under the TR Sustainability Hub umbrella, this new digital event aims to provide duty free and travel retail (DF&TR) stakeholders around the world with a platform for exploring how a growing consumer interest in wellbeing – spanning everything from beauty care to health and nutrition, hydration, stress relief, sleep and spa services – is influencing the way that airports, cruise ships and airlines design the passenger experience and the commercial footprint.
Some 87% of international travellers say they are more concerned about their physical health than before the pandemic, while 73% report greater concern for their mental wellbeing, according to research by m1nd-set.
“This heightened awareness is helping drive demand for products and services that support health, recovery and self-care while travelling,” confirmed the Swiss research agency’s Head of Business Development Anna Marchesini.

Furthermore, almost half of travellers show interest in health and wellness products, indicating that the opportunity extends well beyond a niche group of highly engaged wellness consumers. This creates scope for retailers to develop more accessible propositions across supplements, functional nutrition, hydration, personal care and everyday preventative health.
Additional opportunity indicators uncovered by m1nd-set research include how one in five international travellers would be prepared to pay for services such as meditation areas, spas or sleeping pods.
More than one-third also experience stress at some point during their journey, highlighting a tangible traveller need that airports and retailers can address.
“Nearly half of travellers — 49% — express interest in sleep pods, while 40% are interested in wellness services. Meditation rooms attract interest from 31% of travellers and yoga rooms from 26%,” added Marchesini.

“The importance of wellbeing in travel retail has cut through this year in our conversations with stakeholders across the ecosystem, including many of the themes raised at the TR Consumer Forum in Geneva,” said Faye Bartle, Editorial Director, TRBusiness.
“The time feels right to explore this opportunity and its potential to engage passengers and drive SPP.
“We are seeing new initiatives emerge across the channel, from bespoke beauty products and treatments, pharmacy and spa services to wearable health technology – all responding to those who increasingly want to maintain and improve their wellbeing while they travel.
“And importantly, we know that a happier, calmer and more engaged traveller is more likely to shop and spend. Join us for a week of exclusive content on the topic for actionable insights you can use to top into opportunities to power your business.”
