SOUTH CAROLINA (WCBD) – The month of September is recognized as both National Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

‘We have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact that substance use, mental health struggles, and suicide can have on individuals, families, and our community. We also recognize the importance of prevention, early intervention, connection, and removing the stigma that can keep people from asking for help,” the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office (BCCO) said.

    Officials urge community members to:

    • Check in with someone who may be struggling.

    • Listen without judgment and let others know they are not alone.

    • Talk openly about mental health, substance use, and suicide.

    • Encourage those who need help to reach out for support.

    • Remember that recovery is possible and hope can be found.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to connect.

Officials say one person, one connection, or one person can make a difference.

“Together, we can raise awareness, reduce stigma, support recovery, and work toward preventing suicide in our community,” BCCO.
