Limerick communities are being urged to come together for events throughout the month of September highlighting mental health as part of Green Ribbon month.
The annual World Suicide Prevention Day Candlelit Vigil is set to take place at Arthur’s Quay Park on September 10, with ABC For Mental Health saying the event is “a time to remember those we have lost, stand in solidarity with those affected by suicide”.
They said, “Each year we come together as a community in Limerick for our World Suicide Prevention Day Candlelit Vigil — a time to remember those we have lost, stand in solidarity with those affected by suicide & share a message of hope, support & understanding.

“Over the past few years, we have seen the numbers attending our vigil decrease. This year, we want to change that. We are calling on all organisations, community groups, clubs, services & individuals across Limerick to come together & show their support for suicide awareness & for this important event.
“This vigil belongs to the whole community. It is an opportunity for us to stand together, to let people know that they are not alone, & to remember those whose lives have been lost. As one, we can do little. Together, we can do so much more.”
The vigil, taking place from 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm, is an opportunity to remember those lost to suicide, stand in solidarity with those affected and share a message of hope, support and understanding.
On September 8, Shine will facilitate an introduction to Finding my Way, while September 9 will feature Living with Dyspraxia with Amanda Clifford.
The event forms part of a month of mental health awareness activities in Limerick, with ABC for Mental Health organising a series of Green Ribbon Month events at The Hunt Museum throughout September.
As well as the Candlelit vigil, the programme begins on September 2 with Scent & Stillness: A Meditation & Essential Oils Workshop with Noelle Liston from 1 pm to 2.15 pm.
On September 8, Shine will facilitate an introduction to Finding my Way, while September 9 will feature Living with Dyspraxia with Amanda Clifford.
Other events include You’re Not Alone – Understanding Anxiety & Depression with Gerry Kenny on September 16, Ho’oponopono – The Hawaiian Practice of Forgiveness & Healing with Christine Beekman on September 23, and How to Control Stress rather than Stress Controlling You with Ann McDwyer on September 30.
The Green Ribbon Campaign, which runs all year round, uses September as its chosen month to highlight the campaign and focus on awareness-raising events and activities. Originally launched by Shine, the national stigma-reduction programme for Ireland, many organisations, including ABC for Mental Health, organise campaigns and events which raise awareness, open conversations, and educate as part of the Green Ribbon Campaign.
The groups promote the wearing of the green ribbon, a symbol of solidarity, encouraging us all to engage in open conversations and break down the barriers surrounding mental illness.
