Nearly 5.3 million Floridians who receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits can expect September payments to show up on the normal schedule.
People who get SSI checks will see benefits arrive on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Social Security recipients will be paid on Wednesdays, based on the person’s birth date.
But recipients may want to start budgeting for possible cuts in the future. Experts project the fund could face a shortfall as early as 2032, which could result in monthly benefits being cut by around 28% unless Congress addresses the problem.

At the same time, benefits continue to receive cost-of-living adjustments (COLA). Current estimates expect a 3.4% increase in 2027. The official 2027 COLA will be announced in October.
September 2026 Social Security payment schedule
Social Security benefits, paid mostly to recipients who are older or retired, are typically paid on Wednesdays, and most people receive their check in different weeks based on their birth date.
Sept. 9 for people born from the first through the 10th.
Sept. 16 for people born from the 11th through the 20th.
Sept. 23 for people born from the 21st through the 31st.
People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 follow a different schedule and are paid on the third of each month rather than according to birth date.
2027 Social Security COLA announcement expected in October
The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Current projections call for a 3.4% increase in benefits, but that could change based on future inflation data. The annual adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W.
As of July, the projected COLA increase of 3.4% matches the 3.4% increase in overall consumer prices this year. Any other gains would quickly be swallowed by expected increases in Medicare and drug costs, analysts said.
A Social Security COLA of 3.4% would increase an average benefit of $2,000 by $68 per month.

When will SSI checks be sent early in 2026?
SSI, a program to help people with limited or no income or resources, people aged 65 or older, and people who are blind or have a qualifying disability, normally sends benefits on the first of the month. When that date falls on a holiday or weekend, payments are sent on the last business day before the scheduled date.
September follows the regular schedule, with the next payment due Wednesday, Sept. 1. The next early SSI payment is the November benefit, set for Oct. 30. The first payment of 2027 will be sent on New Year’s Eve due to the holiday.
Finding help in Florida and reporting missing payments
Florida has 52 Social Security offices. Beneficiaries can find the nearest location through the Social Security office locator at ssa.gov/locator. Not every office offers the same services.
If you didn’t get your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, check your bank, the Social Security Administration said, in case there is a processing delay. If a payment is still missing, late, or believed stolen, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local Social Security office. The SSA will review the case, and replace the payment if it is determined to be due.
How many people in Florida receive Social Security benefits?
As of December 2025, 5,294,001 Floridians received Social Security benefits. That included 4,191,491 retired workers, 462,756 disabled workers, 260,003 widow(er)s and parents, 145,263 spouses, and 234,488 children.
