Global Recognition Highlights His Work in Mental Health Accessibility, Prevention, and Sustainable Care
— Clinical psychologist Dr. Akira Olsen, PsyD, EMBA, Founder and CEO of Journey Health, has been named “Humanitarian of the Year” at the Influencer Magazine Awards (IMA) 2026. The award, presented by UK-based Influencer Magazine, was announced on July 1, 2026.
The recognition highlights Dr. Olsen’s longstanding work to expand access to mental health education and care while advancing approaches centered on prevention, resilience, compassion, and long-term well-being.
A licensed clinical psychologist in California and Nevada with more than 17 years of clinical experience, Dr. Olsen is known for an integrative approach that brings together evidence-based psychology, multicultural perspectives, and Eastern traditions.
Central to his work is the belief that mental health should not be viewed solely as an individual concern, but as a collective responsibility shaped by families, communities, social systems, culture, and the environments in which people live.
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Olsen said:
“I believe humanitarian work begins with recognizing the humanity within each person and creating environments in which that humanity can flourish. Throughout my career, I have advocated for mental health not as a luxury, but as a foundation for how we live, connect, learn, work, and contribute to our communities. I am deeply grateful and humbled to see that mission recognized on a global stage.”
Reflecting on the broader significance of the recognition, he added:
“We have a responsibility to move beyond systems that respond only after a crisis occurs. We need to invest in prevention, resilience, education, and cultures of mutual care. This recognition strengthens my commitment to helping make mental health support more accessible and sustainable for future generations.”
Journey Health and the Vision of “Planetary Mental Health”
Founded and led by Dr. Olsen, Journey Health is a mental health initiative focused on clinical care, education, and accessible psychological resources. Its programs emphasize the interconnectedness of mind, body, relationships, culture, and community while translating psychological science into practical tools that can be incorporated into everyday life.
Dr. Olsen’s broader vision is informed by what he describes as “Planetary Mental Health”—an approach that considers individual psychological well-being within the larger context of families, communities, social systems, culture, sustainability, and global well-being.
Rather than viewing mental health exclusively through the lens of illness or crisis intervention, the framework emphasizes prevention, emotional resilience, human connection, and the development of healthier environments in which individuals and communities can thrive.
In his book, The Journey to Self, Dr. Olsen introduces “micro-routines”—small, intentional practices designed to support emotional regulation, self-awareness, connection, and long-term resilience. The approach is intended to make psychological skills more practical and accessible for people navigating the stress, uncertainty, and complexity of modern life.
Through his clinical work, education initiatives, writing, and public outreach, Dr. Olsen has sought to expand conversations about mental health beyond the therapy room and encourage greater psychological literacy in everyday life.
From Japan to Clinical Psychology in the United States
Dr. Akira Olsen was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, and raised in Tokyo and Saitama. After graduating from Keio University, he moved to the United States to pursue graduate education and a career in clinical psychology.
As a bilingual and bicultural Japanese-English clinical psychologist, Dr. Olsen’s work reflects both his professional training in Western psychology and his Japanese cultural background.
His clinical approach incorporates evidence-based and contemporary therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed approaches, somatic interventions, and mindfulness.
His perspective has also been influenced by Eastern practices and early experiences with kendo and the arts in Japan, contributing to his interest in the relationship among mind, body, awareness, discipline, and human connection.
From 2018 to 2022, Dr. Olsen served as a clinical researcher at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has also served as a faculty member and clinical supervisor at Palo Alto University and the Stanford PGSP Consortium, contributing to the education and clinical training of future mental health professionals.
Dr. Olsen has served on the Board of Directors of the San Mateo County Psychological Association and as Chair of its Diversity Committee. In 2024, he was selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who, a U.S.-based biographical registry.
Today, through Journey Health, WARM Education, his clinical work, publications, and digital platforms, Dr. Olsen continues to focus on making psychological knowledge understandable and applicable beyond traditional clinical settings.
His work in trauma-informed care, ADHD, culturally responsive mental health, and integrative psychology reflects a broader goal: helping move mental health care from a primarily crisis-oriented model toward one that also prioritizes education, prevention, resilience, and sustainable well-being.
