DuBOIS – Penn Highlands Healthcare at Home offers monthly bereavement support groups across northwestern Pennsylvania, providing a confidential, caring and supportive environment for individuals who have experienced a loss.

In recognition of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September, the four regional support group locations will gather for a single combined meeting dedicated to suicide awareness, prevention and support for those impacted by suicide loss.

The combined meeting will take place on Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Central Resource Center (CRC Building), located at 204 Hospital Ave. in DuBois.

Typically hosted separately at Penn Highlands DuBois, Penn Highlands Clearfield, Penn Highlands Healthcare at Home in St. Marys and Penn Highlands Healthcare at Home in Brookville, this special combined session brings community members together for crucial education and mutual encouragement.

Kelley Chilson, Psy.D., a licensed psychologist with Penn Highlands DuBois Behavioral Health, will serve as the featured speaker. Chilson will share expert insight on recognizing the warning signs of suicide, strategies for getting help for oneself or a loved one and specialized resources for those grieving a loss due to suicide.

Understanding the impactSuicide remains a critical public health concern both nationally and locally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Leading Causes of Death Report, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States in 2023, claiming more than 49,300 lives.

In Pennsylvania, more than 1,850 residents die by suicide annually. Rural and less populated regions often experience higher rates.

“Understanding the statistics can highlight the severity of the issue,” said Kathie Ann Pearcy, Spiritual Counselor, Chaplain and Minister with Penn Highlands Healthcare at Home. “By bringing our communities together, we aim to foster open communication, break down stigma and offer meaningful support to anyone navigating grief or seeking help.”

The bereavement support group meeting is free and open to all area residents. No reservation is required and confidentiality is strictly respected.

For more information regarding the support group or bereavement services, please contact MaryLou Wehler, Bereavement Coordinator, at 814-788-8002.
