At the end of the school year and as the summer months begin, an opportunity arises to reflect on the importance of joy and resilience in supporting overall well-being.

At the same time, the diverse circumstances that influence mental health and psychological well-being among individuals and families should be acknowledged.

Although summer experiences vary considerably from one household to another, this period is widely recognised as offering valuable opportunities for rest, recovery, personal growth, and the enhancement of emotional well-being.

Consequently, understanding how the summer vacation can promote healthy development and psychological resilience has become an increasingly important area of educational and public health interest.

Supporting positive mental health and well-being during the summer months can be facilitated through the establishment of realistic and manageable daily routines that provide structure and predictability without attempting to replicate the academic demands of the school environment.

The involvement of children in planning daily activities is encouraged, as it promotes a sense of autonomy, belonging, and personal responsibility. Because the needs and circumstances of families vary, summer routines should be designed to reflect each family’s unique priorities, interests, and sources of joy, calmness, and meaning.

Furthermore, healthy lifestyle practices should be incorporated into everyday life, including regular physical activity, nutritious eating, outdoor experiences, opportunities for play, and meaningful learning through cultural activities, traditions, cooking, creative expression, and the development of practical life skills.

Equally important is the promotion of self-care, family connectedness, and community engagement, all of which contribute to emotional resilience, psychological well-being, and healthy development throughout the summer vacation.

Another important consideration in promoting mental health and well-being during the summer vacation period is the growing role of digital resources and technology-supported interventions. The increasing availability of digital mental health resources has created new opportunities to support adolescents and young adults in developing coping skills, enhancing mental health literacy, and accessing psychological support.

Mobile applications and online platforms can serve as accessible tools that complement traditional mental health services by providing evidence-informed guidance and self-directed strategies. For example, MindShift CBT, developed by Anxiety Canada, applies cognitive behavioural therapy principles to help individuals recognise anxiety-related thoughts, develop effective coping strategies, and improve emotional regulation.

Similarly, the Managing Your Stress and Anxiety During Covid-19 resource developed by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) provides practical strategies to support stress management and psychological well-being during periods of increased uncertainty and disruption (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), 2020). In addition, various institutions (summer learning centres, youth summer programmes, and community summer programmes) offer accessible educational and psychosocial resources, such as videos, quizzes, and informational materials, to promote mental health awareness and resilience among adolescents and young adults.

Collectively, these technology-supported resources and interventions demonstrate the potential of digital approaches to foster emotional well-being, encourage help-seeking behaviours, and strengthen resilience among adolescents and young adults.

In summary, the summer vacation period should not be viewed merely as time spent watching television or using electronic devices; rather, it represents an opportunity for recovery, mental health promotion, and psychological well-being.

It provides valuable time for relaxation, emotional renewal, and the release of stress accumulated during the academic year, while also creating a positive foundation for the upcoming school year.
