Injured worker will join Ametros on industry’s largest stage to share his personal post-settlement journey

WILMINGTON, MA (Aug. 11, 2026) – Ametros, the industry leader in professional administration and post-settlement medical care coordination, today announced that General Counsel Shawn Deane will present at the highly anticipated 2026 National Workers’ Compensation & Disability Conference (National Comp) in September.

Shawn will be joined on stage by injured worker Derek Demun, whose life changed in an instant at age 21 when a workplace injury resulted in paraplegia. Together, they will present Unstoppable – An Injured Worker’s Journey to Success Beyond the Claim, a session that dives deep into the post-settlement chapter of workers’ compensation.

When injured workers suffer catastrophic injuries or complex medical conditions, they do not typically return to work. Eventually, they settle their claim; however, it is hardly the end of their journey. Their injury has given way to a new normal – one that will require ongoing doctor’s appointments, procedures, therapy, medical attention, and proper management of settlement funds. Uncertainty and lack of support from the workers’ compensation system often leave these injured workers without a sense of direction.

“Once a claim is settled, an injured worker is usually on their own to navigate ongoing medical needs while simultaneously managing settlement funds,” said Shawn. “That’s a lot to ask of someone whose life has been turned upside down.”

He continued, “There’s a lot more we can do, as an industry, to set up injured workers for success post-settlement, but first we must understand what they go through. There’s no better way to do that than by hearing directly from an injured worker about his own personal journey.”

An avid athlete, outdoor enthusiast, and adventure seeker pre-injury, Derek will take the stage to share vivid details of his life pre-injury; the workplace injury that changed his life forever; navigating the settlement process; and finally, where he is at today. From despair to letting go and eventually, hope, resilience, and peace, attendees will gain an appreciation for the emotional toll that accompanies post-settlement life.

“Whether you’re an employer, insurance carrier, third-party administrator, or attorney, everyone will walk away from this session with a greater knowledge of how to help injured workers maximize the benefits of settlement, while ensuring compliance and sustainability in managing future medical expenses,” said Shawn. “Most importantly, attendees will gain an appreciation for the critical role they can play in providing relief for injured workers throughout this often overlooked, stressful period.”

Shawn and Derek will present Unstoppable – An Injured Worker’s Journey to Success Beyond the Claim at National Comp on Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. PST.
