The first Social Security payment scheduled for August 2026 will be made this week, but millions of Supplemental Security Income recipients have already received their monthly money.

Social Security beneficiaries who began collecting payments before May 1997 are due to receive their August check on Monday, August 3. That is the first payment issued during the month itself, with the remaining Social Security deposits spread across three Wednesdays according to recipients’ birth dates.

SSI followed a different timetable. Those benefits are normally paid on the first day of each month, but August 1 fell on a Saturday in 2026. As a result, the Social Security Administration moved the payment forward to Friday, July 31.

Although that deposit arrived in July, it was the recipient’s regular payment for August. It wasn’t an additional benefit or a bonus check.

August 2026 Social Security payment dates

The complete August schedule depends on when a recipient began collecting benefits and, for most people, the day of the month on which they were born.

People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 will be paid on Monday, August 3.

Beneficiaries who began receiving payments on or after May 1, 1997, generally follow the birth-date schedule. Those born between the first and 10th will be paid on Wednesday, August 12.

Recipients with birthdays from the 11th through the 20th are scheduled for Wednesday, August 19. Those born between the 21st and 31st should receive their money on Wednesday, August 26.

People who receive both Social Security and SSI generally receive their Social Security benefit on the third day of the month and SSI on the first, subject to weekend and federal holiday adjustments.

Why did the August SSI check arrive early?

Federal payment rules require benefits to be issued on the preceding business day when their normal date falls on a weekend or legal public holiday.

That rule moved the August SSI payment from Saturday, August 1, to Friday, July 31. Recipients therefore shouldn’t expect another SSI deposit later in August simply because their payment appeared on a July bank statement.

The maximum federal SSI payment in 2026 is $994 for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple, although actual amounts vary according to income, resources and living arrangements. Some states also provide supplementary payments.

Recipients who don’t see an expected electronic payment should first check with their bank or financial institution, as a delay in posting the deposit may be responsible.

The Social Security Administration advises beneficiaries to allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency about a missing payment.

Therefore, the answer depends on the benefit involved: the August SSI payment has already been issued, while the first Social Security payment of the month is scheduled for Monday, August 3.
