Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues several types of payments, including retirement, survivor, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

Each group of beneficiaries receives their money on different dates throughout the month. Generally, the SSA only sends one payment per month per individual, but in certain cases, a recipient may receive two payments in a single month—or none at all, which will be the case this August.

Who won’t receive a Social Security payment in August 2026?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will not receive a payment in August as they normally would on the first of the month, because the disbursement is being moved up to Friday, July 31.

Supplemental Security Income payments are scheduled for the first day of every month. However, if the first falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the payment is moved up to the preceding business day.

That is what is happening in August. August 1 falls on a Saturday, so the SSI payment for that month will be issued on Friday, July 31. The following SSI payment is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1.

How Social Security payments are distributed each month

According to the SSA’s official schedule, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are issued on the first day of every month. Payments for beneficiaries who began receiving benefits prior to May 1997 are sent on the third day of each month.

For individuals who receive both SSI and regular Social Security benefits (retirement, survivors, or SSDI), the SSI payment is issued on the first day of the month, and the Social Security payment is sent on the third day.

The remaining Social Security checks (retirement, survivors, and SSDI) are distributed on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on the beneficiary’s birth date:

    • Second Wednesday of the month: beneficiaries with birth dates between the 1st and 10th of the month
    • Third Wednesday of each month: beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th
    • Fourth Wednesday of each month: beneficiaries born between the 21st and the 31st

If any payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment is moved up to the preceding business day.

Currently, the Social Security Administration only issues monthly payments via direct deposit or the Direct Express Debit Card. Beneficiaries who used to receive their benefits via paper check in the mail must update their payment method to continue collecting their funds.
