As the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has unveiled a special commemorative Social Security card to mark the historic milestone.

The new “America 250” cards feature a patriotic design honoring the country’s semiquincentennial, but they will only be available for a limited period and to a select group of recipients.

The commemorative cards are part of the federal government’s broader America 250 initiative, which includes events, educational programs and special recognitions leading up to and throughout the anniversary celebrations in 2026.

According to the SSA, the redesigned cards began being issued on July 4, 2026. However, they are not replacing standard Social Security cards permanently, nor will current cardholders automatically receive one in the mail.

Instead, the commemorative version will be issued only to eligible individuals who apply for a new or replacement Social Security card during the designated promotional period.

The Social Security Administration announced that the America 250 design will remain available through December 31, 2026.

After that date, the agency expects to return to issuing its traditional Social Security card design.

That means anyone hoping to receive the commemorative version must submit an eligible application before the end of the calendar year.

In announcing the initiative, the SSA said the special card recognizes an important milestone in American history while continuing to serve the same official purpose as every other Social Security card.

“Our nation’s 250th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the history and values that unite us,” the agency said when unveiling the commemorative card.

“The America 250 Social Security card honors this historic occasion while maintaining the security and integrity Americans expect from Social Security.”

Importantly, the commemorative design does not change a person’s Social Security number, benefits, eligibility or legal status. It is simply a limited-edition version of the official document.

Who can receive the America 250 Social Security card?

Not everyone will automatically receive the commemorative card.

The SSA has emphasized that Americans already in possession of a valid Social Security card do not need to replace it simply to obtain the America 250 version.

Instead, the commemorative cards are intended for people who are already eligible to receive a new card through the agency’s normal application process.

This includes first-time applicants receiving a Social Security number, individuals requesting a replacement card after a loss or theft, and those who qualify for a corrected card because of an approved name change or other eligible update.

Applicants must still meet all existing Social Security documentation requirements, including proof of identity and, when applicable, citizenship or lawful immigration status.

The application process itself remains unchanged. Eligible individuals can begin the request online when available for their circumstances or complete the process through a local Social Security office, depending on the type of request being submitted.

The commemorative design does not carry any additional fee. Since the SSA generally does not charge for Social Security cards, eligible applicants will receive the America 250 version at no extra cost during the promotional period.

The agency has also reminded Americans to be cautious of scams. Because the announcement has generated significant public interest, officials warn that fraudsters may attempt to impersonate Social Security employees or falsely claim that people must pay to receive the commemorative card.

Only official SSA channels should be used to request a new or replacement Social Security card.

The America 250 initiative extends well beyond the Social Security Administration, with numerous federal agencies participating in commemorative programs throughout 2026.

For the SSA, the limited-edition card serves as a symbolic way to recognize the nation’s 250-year history while continuing to provide one of the country’s most important identity documents.

For Americans interested in obtaining the commemorative design, the deadline is straightforward: applications that qualify must be submitted before December 31, 2026.

Once the promotion concludes, the SSA plans to resume issuing its standard Social Security cards, making the America 250 version a unique keepsake tied to one of the nation’s most significant anniversaries.
