Entrepreneurs are hardwired for speed so when you spot an opportunity, you pitch, you close and you scale. It’s what makes you lethal in business.. but if you’re taking that exact same operational playbook and applying it to your dating life you are probably crashing and burning.

I used to be this person. My anxiety ran the show and I treated new relationships like a Q4 sprint. I figured if we just moved at lightspeed.. texting all day, spending every free hour together, integrating into each other’s lives immediately.. I could secure the partnership and lock down that feeling of safety.

But what actually happens when you blitzscale a romance? You create a fragile, false sense of intimacy. The spark fizzles, the other person pulls away and you’re left sitting there feeling totally blindsided, wondering why your “deal” fell through.

If you want a relationship that actually yields long-term returns, you have to stop treating dates like acquisitions. Going slow isn’t about playing games; it is the ultimate due diligence.

The Neuroscience of the “Quick Close“

Before you can fix the pattern, you have to understand the machinery behind it. When you meet someone exciting, your brain doesn’t know the difference between falling in love and closing a massive seed round.

It all comes down to dopamine—your brain’s reward-based neurotransmitter. When your phone lights up with their name, you get a hit. You are quite literally putting yourself on a chemical addiction loop.

To complicate things, a part of your brain called the ventral striatum tricks you into attaching too quickly. It controls your thought loops. If you’re a founder who is exhausted by the grind and quietly thinking, I just want to find my person so I can focus on my business, your brain is fully primed to latch onto the first semi-viable candidate who gives you that dopamine spike.

This leads directly to the Halo Effect. In business, this is equivalent to terrible vetting. A new prospect is nice to the waiter on a first date, and your brain immediately fills in the gaps, projecting a flawless ten-year roadmap onto them. You see one positive trait and blindly assume they are emotionally intelligent, loyal, and ready to build a life. You are buying the hype without looking at the actual financials.

How to Run Proper Due Diligence

Going slow is how you stress-test a potential partner. It ensures your brain and nervous system are wiring correctly to a real human being, rather than attaching to a fantasy. Here is how to execute it.

    1. Regulate Your Founder’s Nervous System

When you consciously force yourself to slow down, your nervous system is going to revolt. You are used to high-speed action and immediate results. Slowing down will feel agonizing. You might feel your heart race (fight-or-flight) or you might completely shut down and isolate (freeze-or-fawn).

You must manage this energy. Go for a physical walk. Walking provides bilateral stimulation, meaning it forces both sides of your brain to engage while your body moves, which helps process racing thoughts. Journaling works similarly by moving your anxiety out of the spiraling center of your brain and onto paper. Neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor notes that an emotion only takes 90 seconds to run its course—but every time you ruminate on a thought, you reset that clock. Sit with the discomfort. Don’t text them just to soothe your anxiety.

    2. Let Time Expose the Vaporware

In the startup world, vaporware is a product that gets hyped up but never actually launches. In dating, it’s love-bombing.

Time is the only metric that reveals if a person’s actions align with their pitch. Are they consistent week over week, or do they start at 100 mph and completely stall out by week three? Ask yourself: Am I desperately attaching to this person because I need a distraction from the stress of my company, or am I slowly connecting with them because I actually respect who they are?

    3. Stop Liquidating Your Assets (Pace Yourself)

A successful founder has a ruthlessly guarded calendar. Do not liquidate your schedule for a new romance.

You are allowed to explicitly set the pace. Tell them, “I’m really enjoying getting to know you, but I move at a slower pace early on.” Do not cancel your board meetings, your gym time, or your networking dinners just because they happen to be free on a Thursday. If taking two hours to respond to a text because you are deep in deep-work mode sends them running, they were never a viable long-term partner anyway.

    4. Ask High-ROI Questions

You wouldn’t hire a C-suite executive without asking them the hard questions. Do the same here.

Get intentional with your conversations. Ask them what their last relationship taught them about themselves. Ask how they handle conflict when the pressure is on. If you are afraid that asking real, probing questions will make you seem like “too much,” you are projecting your own insecurities. If depth scares them off, let them go find less.

    Business Approach
    Dating Equivalent
    The “Go Slow” Strategy

    Blitzscaling
Moving in or committing by month one
Waiting for the dopamine haze to clear before committing

    Due Diligence
    Meeting the parents immediately
Vetting their character over a period of months

    Crisis Management
    Panic-texting when they pull away
Regulating your nervous system and holding boundaries

    Take Radical Ownership

If you launched a product three times in a row and it failed every time, you wouldn’t blame the market—you would analyze the data and pivot.

If you keep meeting the exact same type of person—someone who comes on incredibly strong and then ghosts you—that is a pattern. You have to get curious about your own internal operations. Why are you attracted to chaos? Why does stability feel boring?

Take radical ownership of your dating life. Going slow isn’t a manipulation tactic. It is a strict operational boundary that prevents you from investing your most valuable assets—your time and your heart—into the wrong partnership. Hold your boundaries, protect your peace, and let time reveal who is actually qualified to sit next to you at the top.
