Millions of Americans who receive Social Security retirement, disability and survivor benefits are preparing for their August 2026 payments.
While the Social Security Administration (SSA) will continue using its standard payment schedule, some recipients may notice an unusual twist because of the calendar.

The biggest difference affects Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries. Since Aug. 1, 2026, falls on a Saturday, the SSA will send August SSI payments one day early, meaning eligible recipients will receive their benefits on Friday, July 31.
As a result, SSI beneficiaries will receive two deposits during July, one on July 1 for the July benefit and another on July 31 for the August benefit.
Although this may appear to be a bonus payment, it is simply an advance of the August benefit. SSI recipients will not receive another payment during the month of August.
For those collecting standard Social Security retirement, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or survivor benefits, however, the August payment calendar remains unchanged.
Payments are distributed according to the beneficiary’s birth date unless they fall into one of the exceptions established by the SSA.
Those who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, are generally paid on a different schedule.
These beneficiaries typically receive their Social Security payment on the third day of the month, unless that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
For August 2026, that payment is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 3, because Aug. 3 falls on a weekday.
August 2026 Social Security payment schedule
The majority of Social Security recipients receive their monthly benefit based on their birthday.
The payment schedule for August is as follows:
– Monday, Aug. 3: Beneficiaries who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 and most recipients who receive both SSI and Social Security.
– Wednesday, Aug. 12: People born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
– Wednesday, Aug. 19: People born between the 11th and 20th.
– Wednesday, Aug. 26: People born between the 21st and 31st.
This staggered payment system has been in place for years and helps the Social Security Administration process benefits for nearly 70 million Americans each month.
The calendar adjustment affecting SSI occurs several times throughout the year whenever the first day of a month falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
In those situations, the SSA issues the payment on the last business day before the month begins to ensure recipients have access to their benefits on time.
Because of that rule, recipients should not expect another SSI payment during August. The July 31 deposit already represents the benefit for that month.
Beneficiaries are encouraged to monitor their my Social Security accounts or their bank accounts if they use direct deposit. Most electronic payments arrive on the scheduled date, although financial institutions may vary slightly in the time they make funds available.
The SSA also recommends keeping banking information up to date and reporting any address or account changes promptly to avoid payment delays.
If a scheduled payment does not arrive, the Social Security Administration advises beneficiaries to wait at least three mailing days before contacting the agency, as processing times can vary depending on the payment method and the financial institution.
Understanding the August calendar is especially important this year because the early SSI payment has caused some confusion.
While two SSI deposits will appear in July, recipients are not receiving an extra benefit. Instead, the second July payment is simply their August benefit arriving early due to the weekend calendar, while regular Social Security recipients will continue to receive their payments throughout August according to the standard SSA schedule.
