In the United States, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is a federal agency that provides benefits to retirees, survivors and people with disabilities. Each benefit category has its own eligibility requirements, which means applicants must gather and prepare all necessary documentation.

The SSA issues monthly payments to individuals who have retired after years in the workforce; to people with disabilities who are unable to work due to illness or injury; to the families of deceased workers; and it also administers Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Who can apply for Social Security?

Only individuals who are U.S. citizens or lawfully present non-citizens, and who have a valid Social Security Number (SSN), are eligible for Social Security benefits. You’ll find more information about the immigration documentation required in a Social Security application on the SSA website.

The government may require additional documentation from non‑U.S. citizens applying for SSI, a benefit based on financial need rather than work history. SSI is intended to support people with limited income or those in vulnerable situations.

    What are the requirements?

To qualify for retirement benefits, applicants must have worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years. Benefits can be claimed starting at age 62. However, anyone receiving payments before their full retirement age – between 66 and 67, depending on year of birth – must comply with annual income limits if they continue working while receiving benefits. In 2026, that cap is $24,480.

Disability benefits are available to individuals who cannot work for at least 12 months. Eligibility depends on having a sufficient work history, which varies based on the applicant’s age. Survivor benefits, meanwhile, are provided to the qualifying family members – spouses, children, or parents – of a deceased worker who paid into Social Security.

In general, the SSA requires the following documentation:

    • Proof of identity
    • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status
    • Evidence of past work history
    • Category‑specific documents (such as medical records for disability or a death certificate for survivors)
    • A phone number and mailing address

How you can apply for Social Security benefits

According to the SSA’s official website, there are several ways to apply. Online application is available only in English, but applicants may also schedule an appointment Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. In‑person applications are available at SSA field offices.

As with any federal process, the first step is to confirm eligibility and gather all required documents.

Once the application is submitted, the SSA reviews the paperwork, work history and, for disability benefits, medical records. Once non‑medical requirements are met in a disability-benefits application, the case is forwarded to a Disability Determination Services examiner in the applicant’s state, and an evaluation may be scheduled.

Applicants can check the status of their claim – and get an estimate of processing time – using the SSA’s “my Social Security” online tool. Find out more about how to set up an account on the service.

After the review is complete, the SSA will send a letter by mail indicating whether the application has been approved or denied. If your claim is denied, you have the option to file a formal appeal and request a reconsideration of the decision.
