    I was quite shy and afraid to assert my needs as a little girl, teenager, and young adult woman. I came to realize I had low self-esteem and lacked self-love. I suspect childhood abandonment by my mother had a lot to do with the low self-worth I struggled with.

    Lacking self-love caused me to look elsewhere for love and validation. When I found love, I didn’t feel deserving of it and abandoned loved ones out of fear of love.

    Not having self-compassion made me criticize myself harshly, undervalue my abilities, hide outstanding accomplishments, and justify wrongs done to me.

    Using self-empowerment resources and positive self-talk, I transformed myself into a woman my friends and loved ones say is a “strong, confident, independent woman and mother.”

    As mothers and fathers, we have a duty to mold our daughters and help them develop resilience.
