Men’s Health Month ends, local doctors urge continued awareness

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – As Men’s Health Month comes to an end, local doctors are asking the community to continue raising awareness about men’s health and well-being and to encourage healthy habits at every age.

Men’s Health Month is observed each June to raise awareness about health issues that commonly affect men and to encourage healthier lifestyles.

According to the Men’s Health Network, this year’s theme, “Partners in Care: For Better Lifespans Across the Lifespan,” emphasizes the role families, communities, and healthcare providers play in supporting men’s health.

Health organizations say regular screenings, physical activity, a balanced diet, and mental health awareness can help detect or even prevent many serious health conditions before they become more difficult to treat.

Thinh P. Phan, M.D., with Texas Oncology-Midland Allison Cancer Center, said one of the biggest challenges is that many men ignore symptoms or delay seeking medical care because of work, busy schedules, or the belief that the issue will simply go away.

“Men’s health is very important. We often work so much, long hours, and we neglect our own bodies and our own mind. It’s important that we take some time to go see a primary care physician and not to delay the way we feel. Sometimes we feel tired, or sometimes we have different changes in our bodies, but we often just neglect it, thinking it’ll go away,” Dr. Phan said.

Health experts also encourage men to establish care with a primary care physician, stay current on recommended screenings, maintain an active lifestyle, and seek help for mental health concerns when needed.

“The important message here is: don’t disregard what your body is trying to tell you and go see a doctor when you need to,” Dr. Phan.

Resources are available through organizations including the Men’s Health Network, the National Institute of Mental Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help men and their families learn more about disease prevention, healthy habits and overall wellness.
