Orange County, CA, USA, June 26th, 2026, FinanceWire

A new look at how financial strain, loss of sleep, and digital tools are reshaping mental health across the US.

AMFM Healthcare has announced new findings on stress among Americans and AI, following a national study of 2,000 adults. The study revealed that nearly 73 percent of Americans deal with daily stress, a factor that is driving many to look beyond traditional methods for relief. And even though exercise remained a popular choice, there was a growing trend of people turning to digital solutions, such as artificial intelligence, to help them navigate their mental well-being in an increasingly complicated world.

The Many Modern Drivers of Stress

AMFM’s research has shown that a single factor rarely causes modern stress. Rather, it is the result of overlapping pressures. 82.2 percent of those surveyed cited the rising cost of living as a primary concern, and 77.1 percent reported that their sleep quality suffered as a result.

Additionally, 58.5 percent reported increased feelings of loneliness over the past year.

The study also discovered that the environment played a major role in how people feel. Over half of the respondents reported that the weather had a noticeable impact on their mental state, suggesting that stress is closely linked to daily living conditions. AMFM notes that developing a better understanding of environmental triggers is part of developing a more effective approach to mental health support.

Modern Coping Strategies Under the Microscope

As people searched for ways to cope, their choices tended to vary widely, with 69.2 percent finding relief through physical activity, while almost 47 percent admitted to using substances such as alcohol or cannabis to manage their anxiety.

Digital habits also had an impact, with 50.8 percent of the respondents feeling that social media was actually increasing their overall anxiety. In the end, the study showed there is a need for accessible, healthy coping mechanisms that can be integrated into daily life.

Interestingly, about 31.5 percent of those surveyed admitted to using AI tools or chatbots to manage their stress. They stated that they often chose those methods because they were immediately available. AMFM notes that while these tools can serve as a bridge to care, they are more effective when used as a complement to professional human connection and clinical care rather than as a replacement for them.

Regional Studies and AMFM’s Commitment to Mental Health

AMFM’s regional studies show a variety of stress triggers: over 60 percent in the Midwest cite weather as a stress trigger, while 60.6 percent in the Northeast report increased loneliness. The cost of living was the number one stressor in the South and West, peaking at 84.3 percent in the West. But all of these local variations showed that while stress is considered universal, it can also have geographical pain points. These findings support AMFM’s commitment to flexible and diverse mental health support.

AMFM Healthcare continues to address mental healthcare concerns by studying stressors such as financial pressure, environmental factors, and digital exhaustion.
