Friends and family of East Kilbride teenager Alex Lindsay are heading along this weekend to an annual charity football tournament that is held in his memory.

The popular St Leonards teen will be remembered during the seven-a-side event at Calderglen High School pitches this Sunday, June 28, which also aims to raise awareness of mental health.

Kicking off at 10am, the Alex Lindsay Cup is held each year in memory of Alexander Iain Bonomy-Lindsay and will raise funds for the family’s dedicated mental health charity Adored.

The charity event is held each year to remember 18-year-old Motherwell FC fan Alex who tragically took his own life in July 2018.

Now an annual celebration of Alex’s life, the tournament, has raised tens of thousands of pounds for mental health charities.

Alex’s mum Jill said: “We are looking forward to the eighth Alex Lindsay Cup football tournament.

“What started out as a memorial tournament eight years ago has developed into a significant event which supports our charity Adored; supporting suicide prevention.

“The charity was set up in the months after the first tournament in January 2019 and over the past few years has grown and developed into a real support for schools and young people in the community.

“The programme of mental health support, resilience, life skills and strategies, delivered by Allan Syme from No Limits Coaching, has been piloted in each of the secondary schools in East Kilbride and with resounding success this programme has now been endorsed by South Lanarkshire Council’s Inclusion’s Orbit outreach programme.

“Adored is delighted to be part of this new and exciting opportunity, along with other charities and local businesses, which will see several learning communities within South Lanarkshire receiving support.

“All monies raised go towards our educational programme, wellbeing retreats and one-to-one support sessions. Support can be accessed through our social media.

“So if you can, come along to Calderglen High School pitches on Sunday, June 28, kick-off at 10am – family fun with face painting, raffles, food and drinks, demonstrations from Soul Suites and mental health support stalls from Men With Issues and No Limits Coaching.

“Help us help the young people of East Kilbride. Let’s hope the sun shines!”

Set up by Alex’s family after the teen suddenly and unexpectedly took his own life, Adored aims to keep his memory alive while helping young men who are struggling with their mental
    health.

Inspired by his favourite song, I Wanna be Adored, by The Stone Roses, the cause was established with a focus on mental health and saving young lives.
