A gathering of open conversation and experience-sharing has taken place during an event focused on men’s mental well-being.

Held during Men’s Health Week 2026, “Beyond the Mask” was hosted by Watford-based community initiative Spiced at Watford Palace Theatre.

Spiced, founded by Eva Mbiru, uses food, cooking, and community connection to support mental health across Hertfordshire. The event aimed to offer a safe space for honest discussion around men’s mental well-being.

Simon Plumb, centre manager at The Harlequin Shopping Centre, chaired the evening and encouraged open dialogue throughout. The panel included Jay Williams, Patrick Fox, and James Ogunsanya, who spoke about mental health, vulnerability, resilience, and the importance of giving men permission to speak openly.

Mr Fox, a men’s life coach and host of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, said: “Events like this are important because they remind men that they’re not alone. So many men are carrying pressure, stress and responsibility behind closed doors.

“Creating spaces where men can talk honestly, be heard, and connect with others is a powerful step towards improving mental well-being.”

The conversation also addressed physical health, with Mr Williams, Black health equity engagement officer at Prostate Cancer UK, raising awareness about prostate cancer. He discussed warning signs to watch for and stressed the importance of early detection.

The topic has gained attention following Jeremy Clarkson’s recent announcement that he is in remission after prostate cancer treatment.

Mr Clarkson’s experience has reinforced public awareness about the significance of early action.

Watford MP Matt Turmaine attended the event and contributed to the discussion. He spoke about the need to support men’s mental well-being within the local community and outlined some of the government’s efforts to improve men’s health outcomes.

Men’s Health Week, held annually from June 15 to 21, aims to raise awareness of both the physical and mental health challenges affecting men and to promote positive steps towards better well-being.

“Beyond the Mask” encouraged attendees to share personal experiences, ask questions, and explore ways of supporting themselves and the men in their lives.

Organisers said they were encouraged by the openness and engagement shown throughout the evening. They hope the event will spark ongoing conversations about men’s mental health in Watford and beyond.
