Donation drive aims to expand access to adaptive sports
A Wooster-based nonprofit and a regional grocery chain are asking customers to help fund adaptive sports programs across Ohio through a summer donation drive, according to a community announcement.
Adaptive Sports Ohio and Buehler’s Fresh Foods have launched their ninth annual “A Chance To Play” campaign, which invites shoppers to contribute at checkout to support athletes with physical disabilities.
From June 14 through July 5, customers at all Buehler’s locations can round up their total purchase or make a flat-dollar donation, with proceeds supporting programs and equipment aimed at increasing access to sports.
Campaign supports access to adaptive sports
Adaptive Sports Ohio, headquartered in Wooster, works to expand opportunities for people with physical disabilities who may face barriers such as the high cost of specialized equipment or limited local programs, according to the community announcement.
Funds collected during the campaign help sustain year-round programming for both youth and adults. Supported activities include sled hockey, wheelchair basketball, adaptive track and field, wheelchair football and power wheelchair soccer.
“Nine years of partnership with Buehler’s has shown us the immense power of our community,” said Lisa Followay, president/CEO of Adaptive Sports Ohio. “The generosity of Buehler’s shoppers doesn’t just fund equipment, it unlocks independence, builds lifelong friendships, and ensures that individuals with disabilities can experience the thrill of sports.”
Partnership has raised more than $120,000
Since the campaign began in 2018, it has generated more than $120,000 in donations from customers, according to the announcement. Organizers say the funding goes directly toward community-based and interscholastic programs across the state.
