A child’s first few years lay the foundation for lifelong health, learning, and wellbeing. Nutrition during this period plays a defining role in strengthening immunity, supporting healthy growth, and driving brain development. Yet, despite growing awareness, child malnutrition remains a significant public health challenge. Many children continue to experience hidden hunger, a condition caused by deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals that often go unnoticed but can have lasting consequences for physical growth, cognitive development, and overall health.

According to the recently released National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6)- 2023-24, child nutrition indicators have shown improvement, with stunting among children under five declining from 35.5% in NFHS-5 to 29.3%, while severe wasting has reduced from 7.7% to 5.2%. However, significant challenges remain. Only 15.3% of children aged 6–23 months receive an adequate diet, and exclusive breastfeeding among infants below six months has declined from 63.7% to 55.8%, underscoring the need for renewed focus on early childhood nutrition and feeding practices.

    Building Strong Immunity Starts Early

According to Suhasini Deshmukh, Certified Nutritionist, Co-founder and Director, MedRabbits Healthcare, “A child’s immune system is still developing during the early years, making adequate nutrition essential for building natural defenses against infections and illnesses. Nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc, vitamins A, C, D, and essential fatty acids play a crucial role in supporting immune function.”

“Breastfeeding, particularly during the first six months of life, provides vital antibodies and nutrients that help protect infants from infections while supporting healthy growth. As children transition to complementary feeding, ensuring a balanced and diverse diet becomes equally important,” she adds.

    • Children who do not receive adequate nutrition are often more susceptible to frequent illnesses, slower recovery, and recurring infections.
    • In many cases, poor nutrition and illness create a vicious cycle, where repeated infections further reduce nutrient absorption and appetite, impacting overall health outcomes.

Investing in proper nutrition during the early years can therefore significantly strengthen a child’s resilience and ability to fight disease, reducing health risks both in childhood and later life.

    The Foundation For Healthy Growth

Physical growth during the first five years occurs at an extraordinary pace. Height, weight, bone development, muscle growth, and organ function all depend heavily on the availability of essential nutrients.

    • When children do not receive adequate nourishment during this critical period, the consequences can be long-lasting.
    • Growth faltering, undernutrition, and stunting can affect not only physical development but also future educational attainment and economic productivity.
    • Growth is not solely determined by the quantity of food consumed but also by its nutritional quality.
    • Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, pulses, nuts, and healthy fats provide the vitamins and minerals necessary for optimal development.

Parents often focus on whether their child is eating enough, but equal attention should be given to whether they are receiving a balanced range of nutrients. Encouraging healthy eating habits early in life also helps shape positive dietary behaviours that can continue into adulthood.

Nutrition And Brain Development: A Critical Connection

Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of early childhood is the rapid development of the brain. By the age of five, a significant portion of brain growth and neural connections has already taken place. This means that nutrition during these formative years can have a profound influence on cognitive development, memory, attention, learning ability, and emotional well-being.

    • Nutrients such as iron, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids, choline, and various B vitamins are particularly important for healthy brain function.
    • Deficiencies during early childhood can impact concentration, language development, problem-solving skills, and academic performance later in life.

According to UNICEF, consistently shows that children who receive adequate nutrition in their early years are more likely to achieve developmental milestones, perform better in school, and demonstrate stronger cognitive abilities.

In contrast, nutritional deficits during this sensitive period may have effects that are difficult to reverse later.

    Moving From Treatment To Prevention

As healthcare increasingly embraces preventive and home-based care, nutrition must be recognised as a fundamental pillar of early childhood health. Regular growth monitoring, timely nutritional assessments, parental awareness, and access to professional guidance can help identify and address risks early. Tackling child nutrition requires a collective effort from families, healthcare professionals, educators, and communities through consistent actions such as promoting breastfeeding, ensuring balanced diets, introducing complementary foods at the right time, and addressing micronutrient deficiencies.

    Final Word

The first few years of life present a critical window to shape long-term health outcomes, as good nutrition not only supports physical growth but also strengthens immunity, enhances cognitive development, and lays the foundation for a healthier, more productive future.
