Millions of Americans will receive a federal benefit payment on Monday, June 1, but the date has caused some confusion because not every Social Security recipient is paid at the same time.
The first round of June payments goes to Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries. SSI is a needs-based program for low-income seniors, blind Americans and people with qualifying disabilities, and its payments are usually issued on the first day of each month.

Because June 1, 2026 falls on a Monday, there is no weekend or holiday adjustment. That means SSI recipients should receive their money on the standard schedule through direct deposit or Direct Express cards.
The maximum federal SSI benefit in 2026 is $994 for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple. An essential person, someone who lives with and provides necessary care for certain SSI recipients, may receive up to $498.
That’s separate from the much larger Social Security retirement maximum of up to $5,108, which applies only to qualifying retirees who meet specific earnings and claiming-age requirements.
Who gets paid on June 1?
The June 1 payment is for SSI recipients, not most regular Social Security retirement beneficiaries.
SSI is designed for people with limited income and resources. Unlike retirement benefits, it is not based on how much a person paid into Social Security through payroll taxes across their working life.
Some Americans receive both SSI and Social Security. In those cases, the payment schedule can include two dates in the same week. SSI is paid on the first of the month, while Social Security is usually paid on the third for people who receive both benefits.
That means some recipients may get SSI on June 1 and a separate Social Security payment on June 3. The same date also applies to many people who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997.
The Social Security Administration says beneficiaries who do not receive payment on the expected date should allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency.
When other Social Security checks arrive in June
Most people who began receiving Social Security after May 1997 are paid according to their birth date.
Those born from the 1st through the 10th of the month are scheduled to receive payment on the second Wednesday. In June 2026, that is June 10.
Those born from the 11th through the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, which falls on June 17.
Those born from the 21st through the 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday, which falls on June 24.
For many households, the timing matters as much as the amount. SSI and Social Security benefits are used to cover rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, medical bills and prescription costs.
June begins with SSI recipients. Retirees then follow later in the month, depending on when they first claimed benefits and where their birthday falls on the calendar.
