DESTIN, Fla. (WKRG) — A non-profit event is raising awareness of veteran suicide prevention.

“My husband and I started this organization because we had some friends that were in the service and committed suicide,” Riding 22 co-founder Angela White said. “And we realized a lot of veterans do not have the support system.”

She and her husband, Jason White, created the non-profit Riding 22 in 22 Veteran Suicide Awareness.

“Twenty-two is the average number of veterans that commit suicide a day,” said Angela White.

Originally from Ohio, this crew heads to 22 states in 22 days. Wednesday was day No. 6 at the Harley-Davidson in Destin.

No motorcycle? No problem! This ride is open to anyone who owns wheels, including cars and trucks.

“It doesn’t matter what form of transportation,” said Angela White. “We just want you to come out and be a part of it and help raise awareness.”

All donations collected during these rides go directly toward keeping a veteran alive.

“If a veteran says, ‘Hey, I’ve had enough. I’m ready to commit suicide, I need some help, we can in 2-3 days, have them at Ohio State University, put them through treatment, feed them and house them at no cost to the veteran,” said Jason White.

For disabled veteran Jason, he’s no stranger to losing a friend to suicide.

“A good friend of mine that I hung out with all the time just one night, random as can be, killed himself,” said Jason White. “He had just had enough. I don’t think people understand the transition between military and civilian life.”

    He’s ready to change that.

“The biggest thing a veteran will jump to do is help out another veteran,” Jason White said. “And this is just another way to help veterans out.”

They’re trying to make a difference, one veteran and one destination at a time.

Their next stop is Jacksonville, Alabama.
