May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a national observance since 1949, but its message is more urgent than ever. Nearly 1 in 5 adults in the United States lives with a mental health condition, and more than 1 in 20 experience serious mental illness that deeply disrupts daily life. Behind these numbers are our neighbors, coworkers, friends and family — individuals whose struggles are often invisible but very real.

At Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center, I have the privilege of working alongside dedicated professionals who serve individuals and families facing these challenges every day. We witness the weight of unmet needs and the remarkable resilience of those seeking treatment. Every story reveals strength — and hope.

As behavioral health providers to the Hampton Roads community, we understand that mental health influences all areas of life — relationships, physical health, school, work and overall well-being. Mental illness does not discriminate; it can affect anyone regardless of age, background or circumstance. Yet too many delay seeking help due to fear of judgment or the misconception they must face their struggles alone.

Recent data reveals tens of millions of Americans need mental health treatment annually, yet many do not receive it because of stigma, cost or uncertainty about where to go. Even more concerning are rising rates of anxiety, depression and suicide — especially among young people — and increasing demand for crisis services nationwide.

The message is clear: Mental health can’t wait.

Encouragingly, progress is being made. Awareness is growing, conversations around mental health are more open, and innovations such as telehealth have improved access to care. Integrated, trauma-informed approaches addressing mental health, substance use and physical health together are enabling more sustainable recoveries. Importantly, treatment works — positive outcomes are not just possible; they are happening daily.

At Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center, we see these successes firsthand. Whether someone arrives in crisis, needs short-term stabilization, or seeks ongoing recovery support, our goal is to deliver compassionate, personalized care in a safe and supportive environment. Recovery looks different for everyone, but hope and healing are always achievable with the right support and treatment.

Mental Health Awareness Month is more than recognition — it’s a call to action. We all have a role in breaking the silence and igniting change:

    • Listen with empathy. If you suspect a loved one is struggling, approach them with compassion. Listening without judgment can be the first step to healing. Encourage professional help.
    • Share lifesaving resources. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential support 24/7 by call, text or chat.
    • Respond in emergencies. If someone is in immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
    • Support the future of mental health care. Investing in the next generation of mental health professionals is critical to meeting growing needs. Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center proudly supports training and mentorship programs that strengthen our workforce and community. For more than 40 years, Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center has been honored to serve this community.

If you or someone you know is struggling, our team is ready to help.

You are not alone. Call 988 or 757-627-LIFE for a level of care assessment and visit VBPCWEB.com for more information.

Kurt Hooks, Ph.D., LPC-S, M.P.H. of Virginia Beach  has been the CEO of Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center for more than seven years and has served in clinical, leadership and academic roles in behavioral healthcare in the region for more than 25 years.
