At next month’s CLM Work Comp Conference, attorney Gina Jacobs of Hamilton Miller & Birthisel will present SIU Strategies in Work Comp Cases: The Must-Have Toolbox for Mitigating High-Exposure Claims. Fresh from the Florida Bar Work Comp Forum, Ms. Jacobs graciously gave some of her time to answer our questions about the topic and the session.
Q: How do you define “high-exposure claims”?
Gina Jacobs: I define high-exposure claims as any claim with multiple cost-drivers because this includes not only catastrophic claims but any claim involving multiple coverages.
Q: Who will benefit the most from attending the session?
GJ: Claims Managers, Claims Directors, and Vice Presidents, as this topic will address things to consider regarding internal workflows based on litigation trends.
Q: What’s the path that brought you to presenting on SIUs in workers’ compensation?
GJ: Overall, SIU is a significant tool for loss mitigation for a vast number of reasons and when deployed strategically, this can substantially reduce a claims average spend and number of days open.
Q: What’s the importance of the topic?
GJ: This goes beyond case law update and provides a look into avoiding E&O.
Q: Without giving up spoilers, what’s your favorite piece of info from the session?
GJ: Attendees will leave inspired on ways to challenges themselves on existing processes and workflows to button up any gaps.
