As May approaches, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income recipients should take note of a few calendar shifts that might affect when their checks arrive.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes funds through a staggered Wednesday system for most recipients, making it vital for beneficiaries to identify their specific date on the payment calendar.
For the vast majority of recipients, the schedule follows three specific dates. According to the SSA, beneficiaries born between days 1 and 10 of any month will receive payments on the second Wednesday, which lands on May 13.
Those born between days 11 and 20 are scheduled to get paid on the third Wednesday, May 20, while recipients born between days 21 and 31 will see deposits on the fourth Wednesday, May 27.
These 2026 payments reflect a 2.8% Cost-of-Living Adjustment, which adds an average of $56 to retiree checks for a monthly average of $2,071, the administration announced last October.
Not everyone receives money on the Wednesday cycle, however. Individuals who began claiming Social Security before May 1997 typically receive payments on the third of each month, regardless of birth date.
SSI operates on a different timetable as a needs-based program for older adults and those living with disabilities. SSI recipients are customarily paid on the first of the month.
According to the Social Security Administration, when a scheduled date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, the administration shifts the payment to the prior business day.
Because May 3 falls on a Sunday, those who typically receive payments on that day will see their money arrive on May 1.
Beneficiaries can access the full 2026 schedule or find personalized information by logging into the official SSA online portal.
