The Iowa Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has announced that registration is open for the first Quad Cities Construction Hike for Hope on Friday, June 6, in the Quad Cities area, according to a news release. The event is presented by Russell Construction.

This inaugural event brings together construction professionals, industry leaders, and families to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. The construction industry faces one of the highest suicide rates in the nation, with an estimated 12 construction workers dying by suicide every day in the United States. The Hike for Hope aims to confront this crisis by encouraging open conversations, reducing stigma, and connecting workers with lifesaving mental health resources.

“We’re really excited to bring people together for something that hasn’t been done before in our community and to shine a light on mental health in the construction industry,” said Casey Pape, chair of the Quad Cities Construction Hike for Hope.

Participants can register as individuals, form teams with coworkers, or support the event through sponsorship. Funds raised will support AFSP’s work in research, education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.

“This event reminds the construction community that no one has to face mental health challenges alone,” said organizers with the AFSP Iowa Chapter. “By walking together, we strengthen one another, reduce stigma, and take meaningful steps toward suicide prevention.”

The event will feature a community hike, opportunities to honor loved ones lost to suicide, and resources focused on mental health awareness within the construction industry. The program will begin at 11 a.m. at Sunderbruch, Park, Davenport. It will be hosted by AFSP Iowa Chapter.

Community members, construction companies, unions, and supporters are encouraged to participate and help build a culture where mental health is prioritized and lives are saved.
