The Social Security Administration is warning beneficiaries that some local offices are closed, running on reduced hours, or handling visitors by phone only — and urging people to check before they make the trip.

The SSA’s emergency status page shows a patchwork of disruptions scattered across the country, with individual offices going dark or scaling back without any statewide pattern.

Beneficiaries can check here to see which offices near them are affected, searchable by state and ZIP code.

The agency uses the page to flag “office closures, delayed openings, and other situations affecting service,” updating it as conditions shift.

The SSA’s standing advice— look before you go.

One thing worth noting — these aren’t sweeping statewide shutdowns. They’re isolated to specific offices dealing with temporary issues.

As of April 20, every SSA office in Massachusetts was open with no disruptions reported.

The agency wants most people handling routine business online anyway. Through its my Social Security portal, users can:

    • Review earnings history and benefit estimates
    • Apply for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits
    • Update direct deposit or address information
    • Print benefit verification letters and tax forms

For anything that doesn’t require a face-to-face visit, the SSA says the portal is the faster option and it’s available even when your local office isn’t.
