Kane County residents can pick up free 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline yard signs, naloxone and gun cable locks at upcoming mental health events in April hosted by the Kane County Health Department.

The resources are meant to help promote mental health awareness, prevent overdose deaths and support safe firearm storage, the health department said. No ID or prescription is required to attend or to receive the items.

The events will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 21 at the Kane County Health Department’s Elgin location at 2170 Point Blvd., and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 23 at the health department’s Aurora location at 1240 N. Highland Ave., according to a news release from the health department.

The initiative is part of the 2026 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Awareness campaign, a collaboration between the county health department, Suicide Prevention Services, Ecker Center for Behavioral Health and Family Service Association of Greater Elgin, the news release said.

“Nearly 70% of residents don’t know about 988 or how to use 988 in a crisis situation, based on a recent community survey,” Kane County Health Department Executive Director Michael Isaacson said in the news release. “That has to change.”

In addition to the free resources, staff will be on-site during the events to answer questions about the materials and other resources the county offers, the release said.
