(COLORADO SPRINGS) — According to Children’s Hospital Colorado, over the last two years, the hospital has seen an increase of 20% in patients coming to the emergency department for mental health in April compared to the rest of the year.

Children’s Hospital said every year, following spring break, it sees a sharp increase in patients in the hospital for mental health concerns. While May is Mental Health Awareness Month, experts are saying parents and caregivers need to start discussing mental health with their children now, as end-of-school-year stressors begin to escalate.

In April 2025, pediatric experts cared for over 5,900 patients with mental health concerns across the Children’s Colorado System of Care, a number that Children’s Hospital said is 12% higher than the average month.

End-of-year exams, prom, impending schedule changes/the transition to summertime, more screen time, pressure of school sports, or post-graduation life decisions, starting a summer job, and more can all pile onto a child during this time, according to Children’s Hospital.

For 2026, stress could be amplified by broader global pressures such as rising grocery and gas prices, international events, and the anxiety some families may feel from watching the news.

Experts say to help you start honest conversations with your kids, prioritize sleep, and help them find a balance between screen time and homework.
