On Wednesday, more than seven million Americans are due to receive a benefits payment from the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA).

Who gets paid on Apr. 1?

On Apr. 1, beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income program (SSI) are to be issued their monthly money for April 2026.

Follows run of early SSI payments

April’s SSI payment date is the first since December to fall on the program’s regularly-scheduled day.

The SSA typically sends out SSI on the first day of each month. However, it distributed January, February and March’s money either 24 or 48 hours early, as the first three months of 2026 all began on a non-business day.

    Who qualifies for SSI payments?

A scheme with 7.34 million beneficiaries, according to the SSA’s latest stats, SSI is aimed at low-income, low-resource individuals who are over-65 or have a disability.

Unlike Social Security benefits – retirement, survivor or disability pay – eligibility for SSI is not dependent on a recipient’s work history. It is a purely needs-based scheme.

For more information on who can claim SSI benefits, check out this page on the SSA website.

How much money do SSI recipients get each month?

    • Average payment per person: $735.91
    • Maximum individual payment: $994
    • Maximum couples payment: $1,491
    • Maximum essential-person payment: $498

    Supplemental state SSI

Some SSI recipients can get a supplementary monthly payment from their state. Find out more about the states that offer this extra money on the SSA website.

How does the Social Security Administration make benefits payments?

SSI recipients can provide the SSA with their bank-account information by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting a Social Security office.

SSI can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for federal disbursements made to people without a bank account. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
