Examinations are often viewed as a measure of academic preparation, however, for a large number of students, it also becomes a test of emotional maturity and endurance. The pressure to perform well, the long period of preparation and the expectations that come with it makes this a stressful period in a student’s academic career. It is very important for parents, teachers, and guides to realize, understand, and manage these emotions among children so that they can maintain their mental health. With proper preparation and support systems, the exam season can be a productive time for children, not a stressful time for them.

    Building a healthy study routine

A well-structured routine is one of the most effective ways to reduce exam-related stress. Students often feel overwhelmed when the syllabus appears large or when preparation begins late. Creating a realistic study schedule that breaks the syllabus into manageable segments can make the process feel more achievable.

Attempting past papers and mock tests helps in improving time management and techniques, thereby improving performance, while maintaining their emotional stability during this period. Students can make use of active methods of learning such as summarizing, flashcards, or practice tests to make their learning experience interesting and engaging. Furthermore, revision will help the students avoid cramming for the exams, and hence, make the experience a more efficient one. Through constant studies, a student will be adequately prepared for any exam.

    Prioritising physical well-being

Mental health is inextricably linked with physical health. Students often compromise on their sleep, exercise, and eating habits in order to study for longer durations for their examinations. However, this strategy is not only futile but can also prove to be harmful in the long run. Sleep plays a critical role in memory consolidation as well as in increasing concentration. When students are well-rested, they are in a better state to be able to process their information. Eating healthy balanced food and including physical activity in their daily schedule can help them maintain their energy levels, which is critical in helping them avoid fatigue. Short physical activities such as stretching, walking, as well as breathing exercises, can help them avoid tension as well as stress, which can help them maintain emotional stability during critical times such as examinations.

    Managing expectations and self-pressure

One of the main factors that contribute to exam anxiety is self-pressure. While having high ambitions is good, unrealistic expectations can lead to self-doubt and fear of failure. Students need to understand that their exams are only a part of their academic journey. Exams are simply a tool to gauge their learning, not their self-worth. Setting realistic goals and rewarding themselves for their achievements during their studies can help them effectively manage their levels of anxiety. Equally important is avoiding comparisons with peers. Every person has their own pace of learning and their own strengths, so it is important to understand that a student should never compare themselves to others and focus on their own progress rather than external competition. This enables them to approach exams with greater confidence and emotional balance.

    A balanced perspective

At the end of the day, exams are merely stepping stones for our children to grow both intellectually and personally; however, they are not the end of the road, and what truly matters here is learning. When students maintain healthy routines, seek support when needed, and approach preparation with balance and perspective, exam season becomes less intimidating. It is our responsibility as educators and parents to constantly remind them that their health is just as important as their academic performance. With the right mindset and supportive guidance, students can navigate exams with resilience, confidence, and a healthy sense of purpose.Niru Agarwal, Managing Trustee, Greenwood High International School
