UGC has urged universities to prioritise student mental health and well-being by integrating counselling services, sports activities and awareness programmes into campus life.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities and higher educational institutions across India to prioritise student mental health and overall well-being as an essential part of campus life. The directive emphasises the need to create a supportive academic environment where emotional, psychological and physical health receive equal importance alongside academic performance.

The move comes amid growing concerns over stress, academic pressure, and mental health challenges faced by students in higher education. By encouraging institutions to adopt a holistic approach, the UGC aims to strengthen campus support systems and ensure that students have access to proper mental health resources.

Focus on Mental Health Support and Counselling Services

As part of the initiative, universities have been advised to expand mental health counselling services and student support programmes on campuses. The guidelines stress the importance of providing accessible mental health assistance so that students can seek help when facing academic pressure, anxiety, or emotional distress.

Institutions are encouraged to integrate structured support systems such as counselling centres, mentorship programmes, and awareness campaigns to promote emotional well-being and early intervention.

Promoting Sports, Physical Activity and Healthy Campus Culture

The UGC has also highlighted the role of sports, fitness activities, and recreational programmes in improving student well-being. Universities are advised to actively promote physical activities and co-curricular participation to help students maintain a healthy balance between academic and personal life.

Such initiatives are expected to reduce stress levels and encourage students to adopt healthier lifestyles during their academic journey.

Leveraging Government Initiatives for Mental Wellness

The commission has suggested that institutions utilise national programmes such as the Manodarpan initiative, which provides psychological support and mental health resources to students. By linking campus services with such initiatives, universities can offer broader support networks for students in need.

Additionally, institutions have been given flexibility to implement the guidelines in ways that best suit their campus environment and student community.

The UGC’s directive reflects a growing recognition that student well-being is a critical component of quality education. By encouraging universities to integrate mental health awareness, counselling services, and physical activities into campus life, the commission aims to create safer and more inclusive learning environments.

If implemented effectively, these measures could significantly improve the overall mental health ecosystem in India’s higher education institutions, ensuring that students receive the support they need to thrive academically and personally.
