Social Security is paid out on Wednesday, Mar. 11: who benefits?

This week, millions of Social Security beneficiaries are to get their latest monthly payment, as the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) kicks off March 2026’s three-Wednesdays distribution cycle.

On Wednesday, Mar. 11, 2026, the SSA is to send out benefits to certain recipients of Social Security retirement, disability or survivor pay.

What is the SSA’s three-Wednesdays payment cycle?

Of the U.S.’s 70.6 million recipients of retirement, disability or survivor benefits, most are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month.

A beneficiary’s designated Wednesday is decided by the date of birth of the worker whose Social Security taxes have earned the benefits entitlement.

If you receive benefits based on your own work record, your date of birth is used. If you claim benefits based on someone’s employment history – e.g. that of a spouse or parent – the SSA uses the other person’s birthday.

Who gets Social Security benefits on Mar. 11?

As it falls on the second Wednesday in March 2026, this week’s payment run covers birthdays between the first and 10th of any month. March’s full three-Wednesdays payment cycle is as follows:

    • Born on 1st-10th: Weds., Mar. 11
    • Born on 11th-20th: Weds., Mar. 18
    • Born on 21st-31st: Weds., Mar. 25

Who isn’t paid benefits on a Wednesday in March 2026?

    • Some long-term Social Security recipients

Beneficiaries who starting claiming Social Security retirement, disability or survivor benefits before May 1997 are typically paid on the third day of each month, irrespective of their date of birth. This month, these long-standing recipients were therefore due to be sent their benefits on Tuesday, Mar. 3.

Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – a separate SSA benefit for low-income Americans who are over 65 or have a disability – are normally paid on the first of the month, regardless of their date of birth.

However, as Mar. 1 was a weekend day, this month’s SSI payment date was brought forward to the nearest working day before then: Friday, Feb. 27.

Unlike the SSA’s retirement, disability and survivor programs, SSI is a purely needs-based scheme. It does not depend on a recipients’ Social Security-tax contributions.

    • Dual recipients (SSI + regular Social Security)

In the U.S., around 2.5 million people receive both SSI and one of the SSA’s retirement, disability or survivor benefits. For March, these twin beneficiaries were to be paid the former on Feb. 27, and the latter on Mar. 3.

    SSA’s non-Wednesday benefit payments in March 2026:

    • SSI: Fri., Feb. 27
    • Pre-May ’97 Social Sec.: Tue., Mar. 3
    • Dual recipients: SSI on Fri., Feb. 27; Social Sec. on Tue., Mar. 3

You can check out the SSA’s complete benefits-payment schedule for 2026 in this online calendar.

How much are Social Security and SSI benefits each month?

According to the latest figures shared by the SSA, the average monthly amounts for Social Security and SSI benefits are:

    • Retired workers: $2,074.53
    • Disabled workers: $1,633.48
    • Survivors: $1,622.32
    • SSI recipients: $737.00

How does the Social Security Administration pay out benefits?

The SSA says it “in most cases” no longer sends out benefits as paper checks; instead, the agency offers beneficiaries two electronic methods of receiving payments:

If they provide the SSA with their bank-account details, recipients can be paid by direct deposit. Social Security beneficiaries can update their banking info using the online “my Social Security” tool. SSI recipients should call 1-800-772-1213.

Benefits can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal payments made to recipients who do not have a bank account. You can sign up for Direct Express at 1-800-333-1795 or on the service’s website.
