Wireless implant offering hope for people with macular degeneration

An innovative retinal implant is showing promising signs of restoring central vision in people with age-related macular generation (AMD), currently one of the most common causes of permanent blindness.

Results from an international clinical trial found 81% of participants experienced meaningful improvements in visual acuity, one year after the wireless chip was implanted.

India to offer free cervical cancer vaccine to teenage girls

India will launch a free vaccine program for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), in a bid to reduce rates of cervical cancer.

The voluntary program will be offered to 14 year old girls in the country, and follows news last year that Australia is on track to become the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer – thanks to the HPV vaccine and improved screening.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India, with almost 80,000 new cases annually.

Florida man survives days without food or water, while stuck in ‘quicksand’ mud

A Florida man has an incredible story of survival, after spending days stuck in mud that authorities say mimicked quicksand – without food or water

The 36 year old was last seen on Valentine’s Day, with local police finding the man stuck in the mud more than a week later after first spotting his car near a Sand Plant.

He had withstood freezing temperatures and had no food or water, and was flown to hospital in a critical condition after he was painstakingly removed from the mud.
