Over seven million Americans are to receive benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) on Friday this week – a payment sent out slightly ahead of the agency’s typical schedule.

Who gets paid by the SSA this Friday?

On Feb. 27, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are to be issued their monthly benefits for March.

Why is March 2026’s SSI going out early?

The SSA normally makes SSI payments on the first day of each month. However, as March begins on a Sunday, next month’s money is to be distributed on the nearest working day before Mar. 1.

According to the SSA’s official distribution schedule, March’s benefits are the third straight SSI payment to be sent out at the end of the preceding month.

The distribution of SSI benefits will return to its regular date in April, as Apr. 1 is a Wednesday.

Who in the U.S. is eligible for SSI payments?

A scheme that currently has 7.37 million beneficiaries across the U.S., according to the latest figures shared by the SSA, SSI is aimed at low-income, low-resource individuals who are over-65 or have a disability.

Unlike Social Security schemes such as retirement benefits, survivor checks and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), eligibility for SSI does not depend on payment of Social Security taxes. It is a purely needs-based program.

You can learn more about who qualifies for SSI benefits by checking out this page on the SSA website.

How much are monthly SSI payments?

As of January, monthly SSI payments averaged $737.00, according to the SSA. Last month’s program benefits were the first to feature a 2.8% increase, as part of the agency’s annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).

The maximum monthly amount available to an individual SSI claimant has increased to $994 per month in 2026, while. eligible couples can claim a joint monthly payment of up to $1,491.

    Supplemental state SSI payments

Some SSI recipients can get an additional monthly payment from their state. You can find out more about the states that offer this extra money by taking a look at this page on the SSA website.

When is Social Security issuing other March 2026 benefits?

Most beneficiaries of retirement, SSDI and survivor pay will receive next month’s benefits on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in March.

Their designated Wednesday depends on the date of birth of the worker whose employment record has accumulated the benefits entitlement.

    • Born on 1st-10th of any month: Weds., Mar. 11
    • Born on 11th-20th of any month: Weds., Mar. 18
    • Born on 21st-31st of any month: Weds., Mar. 25

The SSA’s three-Wednesdays payment cycle does not apply to any beneficiaries who started claiming their retirement, survivor or SSDI pay before May 1997. These long-term beneficiaries are to get their money on Tuesday, Mar. 3, regardless of their date of birth.

What if you get SSI and Social Security?

If you receive both SSI and any of the SSA’s retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits, you are to get the former on Feb. 27, followed by the latter on Tuesday, Mar. 3.

You can check out the SSA’s complete benefits-payment schedule for 2026 in this online calendar.

How does the Social Security Administration send out benefits?

The SSA says it is “in most cases” no longer issuing benefits as paper checks. Instead, the agency offers recipients two ways of collecting their payments electronically:

Beneficiaries can have their money paid into their bank account by direct deposit, by providing the SSA with their banking details.

Recipients of retirement, SSDI and survivor pay can provide their bank-account information on the online “my Social Security” portal. This service is not available to SSI beneficiaries, however; the agency says they must call 1-800-772-1213.

Recipients also have the option of receiving their benefits on the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal payments made to people without a bank account. You can sign up for the service at 1-800-333-1795 or on the Direct Express website.
