In today’s busy life, priorities come first. A typical to do list usually contains work related activities, shopping, cleaning, and then maybe self-care. But a new viral social media trend is looking to make self-care a daily habit that doesn’t fall on the bottom of the list.

This trend is known as wellness stacking, according to Healthline, and it revolves around pairing simple self-care and wellness practices into one intentional time block. Use the good habits you are already doing and build on them to do even more.

TikTok user @hummusbirrd  posted a video series about wellness stacks. Some of the combos included listening to an audiobook while walking or using vision therapy glasses at the same time as whitening strips.

    About Wellness Stacking
But is this trend effective? And can you keep this routine up? According to mental health professionals, since wellness stacking is designed to give you small wins, it is a healthy way to support emotional wellbeing.

“From a mental-health perspective, wellness stacking is one of the more sustainable trends online because it centers on small, realistic habits rather than extreme routines,” Andrea Gleim, PsyD, a psychologist and founder of Mindfully Mine Counseling Center, told Healthline.

Another reason why it works, is that rather than dramatic reinventions of yourself, wellness stacking builds on top of your already existing routine, according to Vogue Singapore. All you need to do is add a self-care habit to an existing behavior. Layering wellness behaviors together makes it easier to stick.

What Does Effective Stacking Look Like

First plan what you want to incorporate and how it fits with your current routine. Some things are not negotiable like showering, eating, and household chores. Want to drink more water, fill a reusable bottle as part of your morning getting ready to go to work routine. Turn on a podcast while you do the dishes. Or find a spot for your gua sha in your shower so skincare becomes second nature.

The key to wellness stacking is to start with just one habit and once it becomes routine, add an additional one. Taking baby steps is the way to successfully build your stack.

“Those small habits create small wins, which boost motivation and reinforce the behavior over time,” Gleim told Healthline. “Our brains love patterns, and wellness stacking turns self-care into a simple, repeatable rhythm instead of a long list of disconnected tasks.”

Start wellness stacking and soon you will build a reliable system that will make you feel grounded, balanced, and cared for.
