Some Social Security recipients won’t receive their normal payment in March.
Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries – generally people with limited income who are 65 and older or people who are blind or have a disability – won’t receive a payment in March. The change is due to a quirk of the calendar and the regular payment date.
SSI recipients are paid the first of the month, unless that day falls on a holiday or a weekend. March 1 is a Sunday, so SSI payments will be made on Friday, Feb. 27. The regular SSI schedule will resume in April with payments coming on the first. The next payments will arrive on the scheduled days – May 1 and June 1.
SSI payment schedule
The remainder of the year’s payment schedule is:
- July 1 and July 31 – Second payment is for August
- August – No payment since Aug. 1 is a Saturday
- Sept. 1 – Regular payment
- Oct. 1 and 30th – Second payment is for November
- November – No payment since Nov. 1 is a Sunday
- Dec. 1 and 31st – Second payment is for Jan. 1, 2027
The average SSI payment is $737 a month but that can vary based on age, income and other factors. The maximum monthly benefit is $994 for individuals and $1,491 for couples.
Regular Social Security payments are based on the recipient’s date of birth. That schedule is:
- People born 1st – 10th are paid on the second Wednesday of the month
- People born 11th- 20th are paid on the third Wednesday of the month
- People born 21st – 31st of the month are paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month
People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 or those receiving both Social Security and SSI are paid on separate dates. Social Security is paid on the third of the month and SSI on the first.
