India faces shortage of registered psychologists for mental health care, study finds

India is facing a serious shortage of registered psychologists, and it could directly affect mental health care and suicide prevention efforts across the country. A recent study has found that the number of trained and registered psychologists in India is far lower than what is required to meet growing demand. As cases of stress, depression and anxiety rise, experts say the gap in mental health services is becoming harder to ignore. Without enough professionals, timely support and early intervention may remain out of reach for many.

The study points out that mental health disorders are increasing in India. At the same time, awareness around mental health care and suicide prevention has also grown. More people are seeking help but the system is struggling to keep up.

Despite this rising demand, the number of registered psychologists remains limited. This mismatch means many patients may face long waiting periods, limited access to therapy, or may not receive care at all.

    SHORTAGE OF REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGISTS

According to the study, India does not have enough registered psychologists to support its vast population. In a country with over a billion people, the availability of qualified mental health professionals remains low.

This shortage becomes even more concerning in the context of suicide prevention. Early counselling and psychological support can play a key role in preventing suicides. However, when trained professionals are scarce, timely help becomes difficult.

The study stresses that increasing the number of trained and registered psychologists is necessary to strengthen India’s mental health care system.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION

Mental health care and suicide prevention go hand in hand. Experts say that accessible counselling services, early diagnosis and consistent follow-up care are crucial in reducing suicide risk.

If there are not enough registered psychologists, people dealing with severe stress, depression or other mental health conditions may not receive the help they need. Rural and underserved areas are likely to face even bigger gaps.

The findings call for urgent policy attention. Expanding training programmes, improving registration systems and investing in mental health infrastructure could help bridge the gap.

India has taken steps to improve mental health awareness in recent years. But this study makes it clear: without enough registered psychologists, mental health care and suicide prevention efforts may fall short.
