We’ve all tried to build a self-care or self-compassion habit, stuck with it for a week or two, then watched it disappear from our lives.

New research out of UC Berkeley tested whether the problem is with the technique or the habit, assigning nearly 500 adults to learn a 20-second self-compassion practice either on its own or alongside a few basic habit-building tools. Six months later, only one of those groups was still seeing strong benefits.

What self-compassionate touch actually looks like

The practice used in the study was simple. Participants were taught to place a hand on their heart, cheek, or another comforting spot on their body, then hold it there for up to 20 seconds while offering themselves some warmth in the same way they would comfort a friend who’s having a hard day.

Berkeley researchers randomly assigned 497 adults across the U.S. to learn this technique on its own or to learn it alongside tools designed to make the practice into a habit. Everyone was asked to practice at least once a day and checked back in at three and six months. The design builds on earlier research from the same team, which first tested self-compassionate touch as a daily micropractice among college students and found that benefits showed up mainly in the people who actually practiced daily.

The habit-formation toolkit that made the difference

The habit-formation group learned the same technique and completed an additional 15-minute self-guided intervention that gave participants a set of practical tools to turn a good intention into automatic behavior.

    • A personal cue: Choosing a consistent moment in their day, like brushing their teeth or sitting down at their desk, to anchor the practice to.

    • Reminders: Setting simple alerts so the new habit didn’t rely purely on memory.

    • Planned skip days: Building in permission to miss a day, rather than treating one lapse as failure.

    • Visualization: Mentally picturing themselves doing the practice in the moments it was supposed to happen.

    Automaticity beats willpower

If motivation were what made a practice last, more people would have success with self-care habits. This study revealed that automaticity has a greater impact on both the frequency of the self-compassion habit and its intended outcomes.

Compared with the group practicing on its own, the habit-formation group showed greater increases in how often they practiced, how automatic the practice felt, their self-compassion, and how automatic that self-compassion itself became. They also saw a bigger drop in mental health symptoms by the six-month mark.

Increases in automaticity within the first three months explained 40% to 83% of the benefits people still had at six months. Once the practice stopped requiring willpower, the benefits largely held on their own.

This tracks with previous research on habit formation. Separate work on context-response associations has found that repeating a behavior in the same context builds a mental link between that context and the action, so the behavior eventually fires automatically when the cue shows up, removing the need for a conscious decision each time.

    The takeaway

There was no significant difference between the groups in perceived stress, and the overall effect sizes were small to moderate, so this isn’t a cure-all. But for a one-time, 15-minute self-guided course, durable improvements in self-compassion and mental health symptoms are an impressive return.

The best part is, you don’t need a research team to apply this to your own life. Pick a self-compassion practice, whether that’s self-compassionate touch or something else, and attach it to an existing part of your day, like your morning coffee or your commute. Set one reminder, and decide in advance that missing a day is expected and the habit can survive it. None of this requires more discipline. It requires designing your day so the habit eventually stops needing effort at all.
