OBRA Foundation has marked the 2026 World Suicide Prevention Day with a mental health awareness programme aimed at encouraging open conversations around emotional distress, suicide prevention and the often-hidden struggles faced by individuals.

The event, held on September 10, brought participants together to discuss mental health, pain and the importance of creating safe spaces where people can speak freely about their experiences without fear of judgment.

Reflecting on the programme, one of the participants described the experience as insightful, emotionally heavy and ultimately a blessing, noting that the gathering addressed subjects that are often avoided in everyday conversations.

“We came together to talk about something we often avoid mental health, pain, and the silent battles people fight,” the participant said.

According to the account, OBRA Foundation used the occasion to create a supportive environment for participants to listen, learn and reinforce the message that individuals facing emotional or psychological challenges are not alone and that help remains available.

The programme also highlighted the importance of checking on friends, relatives, colleagues and other people who may be struggling silently.

“If there’s one thing I’m leaving with: Check on your people. Speak up. Listen without judgment. Hope is real,” the participant said.

The organisers also urged members of the public to ensure that conversations around mental health and suicide prevention continue beyond World Suicide Prevention Day.

“Let’s keep the conversation going not just on September 10th, but every day,” the participant added.

The event received support from Pepsi Naubahar Bottling Company, First City Monument Bank Limited and Juhel Nigeria Limited, with appreciation expressed to the organisations for supporting the mental health awareness initiative.

OBRA Legal LP, Coach Uzoamaka Nwachukwu and Chukwubuikem were also acknowledged for their roles and support for the programme.

The World Health Organization and Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation were also referenced as part of the broader conversation around mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

The organisers stressed that sustained public education, compassionate listening and timely support remain important in addressing mental health challenges and helping people experiencing difficult moments to seek assistance.
