September is National Suicide Awareness Month, a time dedicated to encouraging conversations about mental health, recognizing warning signs and reminding those who may be struggling that help and support are readily available.

Locally, The Support Hub of Eagle Pass will bring that message into the community with its annual Suicide Awareness Walk, “Fall Into Hope,” scheduled for Thursday, September 10, 2026 in downtown Eagle Pass.

The “Fall into Hope” Suicide Awareness Walk, a free community event and open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Eagle Pass Public Library and conclude at San Juan Plaza. Schools, businesses, organizations, families and residents of all ages are being encouraged to participate and walk together in support of awareness, healing and hope.

The event comes as Maverick County continues confronting the impact of suicide and mental health crises.

During 2025, local authorities recorded six suicides in Maverick County.

Eagle Pass Fire Chief Rodolfo Cardona also previously reported at least 18 suicide attempts or incidents of self-inflicted harm during the year.

Behind those statistics are individuals, families and friends whose lives have been affected, as well as first responders who often encounter people during some of their most difficult moments.

Mental health struggles can develop from many circumstances, including depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, financial pressures, relationships and personal crises.

Fear of judgment or the stigma surrounding mental health can also prevent someone from reaching out before a crisis occurs.

Local mental health advocate Elias Diaz-Reyes has emphasized the importance of continuing to expand assistance in the community.

“We continue working to bring more help to our community,” Diaz-Reyes said. “Seeking help should not be seen as a weakness, but as a necessary and courageous step toward healing,” added Diaz-Reyes.

Local healthcare providers and community organizations offer counseling, mental health services and crisis assistance to residents who need support.

The Support Hub’s September 10 walk seeks to strengthen that message by bringing the community together and reminding residents that a conversation, a helping hand or simply checking on someone can make a difference.

The message behind the walk is simple but important, there is hope, there is help, and no one facing a mental health crisis should have to face it alone.

If you or someone you know is struggling or experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 for confidential support.
